"GS" in this case meaning Good Sports...

Out cruisin' the Regal a few summers back I noticed a couple guys in a blue 81 TA playing with some of the other traffic. I'm guessing they were watching me too as we both started cutting off Main early trying to catch up with the other. We played cat-n-mouse so long when we finally did get side by side the passenger laughed and said 'finally!'

We exchanged the usual lies - me & my "Buick 350"; him a "403 Olds". His passenger waved a start & we took off from about a 35-40 mph roll. We held dead even for a few car lengths, but had to let off for traffic. We headed for a remote area to play some more.

We agreed on what would be the finish line and to run from a standing start. I had crummy tires at the time and knew I'd have to be careful. I babied it at first, but he hooked and was gone. I tried jumping into it too soon & made smoke. When I finally hooked back up he was an easy 4 car lengths ahead. He beat me to finish line by a good 2 car lengths.

He waved me over to talk. He said I obviously had the power, just no traction. Would I want to run again, but from a roll this time to be more fair? SURE!! From a 20 mph roll I jumped ahead about a fender length & pulled away from there.

Again we pulled over after. He was disappointed in being beat. ?? I teased him about his short-term memory - he had just beat me too. Hearing that was my first loss with the big block his grin came back. He fessed up his "403" Olds was in fact a well-built 455 Olds. I admitted to the Stage 1.

That was about 9:30 or so. We sat bench racing 'til about 2:00 that morning. Great guys. How the hobby should be!!
