The seller told me he has "a chevy 10 bolt rearend from 1970 chevy chevelle will all so fit monte carlo and some olds, pontiacs etc. complete drum to drum just upgraded rear to 12 bolt so selling old one" Will that fit my 1970 skylark? And then, if the gear ratio is not what I want (>3.7), how hard is it to change it so that it is greater than 3.7? Thanks! <table summary="craigslist hosted images"><tbody><tr><td align="center"> </td> <td align="center"> </td></tr></tbody></table>
Don't waste your time on it......it is an 8.2 which what your car has now. Get the corporate 8.5" from any 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark. Best rear built, easiest to get parts and not expensive to build/rebuild.
you can get gears for it or yours but the later 8.5 is better if you are looking to make some real power but the 8.2 is ok for a 350 street car
oh i didn't realize that's what i have in right now. two questions then follow 1) what is involved in re-gearing my stock rear end? 2) what power level is my stock rear reliably good for?
The one on e-bay? Has a yoke for bolt-on u-joint straps, looks like an 8.5, good to build if it is. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/68-7...006QQitemZ160168869916QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
The one on EBay mentioned previously is from a Chevelle and is an 8.2" Only 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark models had the 8.5" You can get gears for your 8.2" but suppliers have limited gear selection and posi units are much more expensive for the 8.2" 8.5" can handle 500 hp
Will be close to the 8.5" but your problem with an open rear is traction....so you are basically limited to 250-300 hp
I just found a rear that says : 3.42 gears 10 bolt 8.5" GM axle It was removed from a chevy truck, but I don't know which for sure. Is there only one 10 bolt 8.5" and is this certain to fit? Or should I hold out until I find what it came off, if there are different versions of this rear?
While it may be an 8.5, if it came out of a truck, the spring perches and control arm connections will be different. Hold off.
