looking for more info on heads and to share ideas on drag racing 425. Can you still find roller cams and fuel injection. What is safe rpm on motor and when do stock parts start becoming liabilty. Wasn't sombody starting to make roller rockers. Thanks, mike

  2. My Nailhead races down to the bodyshop where it then takes on a slow-as-molasses pace.

  3. for 5000 lbs, my 58 gets around ok, better than some rice rockets. Look up Eelco if you need some parts, seems like they have a good selection.

Have you talked to Carmen Fasco and Bob Quigg?

Tom Telesco is selling Roller Rockers now. First batch is being shipped.
Carmen could answer the questions better. He is so old school he's not on the 'net

OK, It depends on what class you are racing to some degree.
The nails have a good oil system, good cooling, forged steel rods, forged steel cranks. The weakest thing is the pistons. [cast]
You can turn up to 5500 to 6000 with good hyperutecic cast, but to be really safe you need forged. Pricey but worth it. Find them on ebay, or from carmen or Tellesco. Telly has the roller rockers. The best intakes will be from Eelco. [new run of them]
    Vintage stuff on ebay.
Be sure to tighten the harmonic balancer to 200 ft.lb. minimum.
    You will need better pushrods.
I raced one with cast pistons for 3 years , shifting at 6000 all the time and never had a problem with it. Had ram air , holley 950 3barrell carb, headers, Buick super wildcat cam, recurve dist. , flex fan and a 4 core rad. kept it cool.

  7. Hilborn still makes mechanical fuel injection setups for the nailhead and now makes an electronic version that looks like the old style but works far better. Carmen has a nice selection of NEW cams as well as rollmaster billet double roller timing sets.

Greg Gessler can work your intake/exhaust manifolds or make your heads flow much better.

Thanks for replies. How much hp tq could be expected. The motor has alot done now but looking for more. :) I would like to see 450 to 500 with out throwing to much money at it. Its more for the "what?" factor more than anything else. The bottom end sounds solid but what happens to the top end when pushing it. How do i find those guys?

Without making it too complicated. A nailhead isn't cheap to do anything to. Especially if you want hp. The build good power and torque to start with and you can get a little more without a lot of expense but it starts getting expensive around 450 to 500hp. If you let us know what your budget is we may be able to help you out.

When i stated cheap i meant not 10,000. What does it take to get those hp levels and have you done it. Not new to building hp just looking for some insight or proven combos. I have some good stuff now but what makes it. The motor had nos on it at one time. I'm looking for na #. Nailheadracer what kind of power do you think you have. Thanks Mike S
