Can you please post the all cowl codes listed for the vinyl/convertible tops?

    A - White
    B - Black
    etc..

    Thanks in advance!

    Marco,
I found this info at the top of a 1972 Buick GS wholesale car order form. It is a different sheet then the (Revision 1) posted on your site.

    Convertible tops
    1 white
    2 black
    6 sandalwood
    9 green

    Vinyl tops
    1 white
    2 black
    5 sandalwood
    6 tan
    9 green

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Duane.

Those are the Buick sales codes, used on the order forms. I need the Fisher body codes that they put on the cowl. My 1970 assembly manual has them listed as 'CISCO CODE' in section 0. I would venture a guess that a 1972 assembly manual would have them listed as 'CISCO CODE' as well.

I have someone who has an upper body paint code of 'U' on their Flint built 1972 Stage1 coupe. I'm trying to help them out.

    Thanks!

    Marco,
My 72 assembly manual does not list any codes for vinyl/conv tops. When I go to the page indicated for them it only shows paint colors.
The paint code "U" is Antique Gold, and the new for 72 Vinyl top color is Tan (It replaced the 71 Dark Brown top.) Maybe the code "U" for vinyl tops is Tan?
I have Rich checking through his 72 literature, I think he has a 72 Fisher Body book. I will get back to you if I find out anything further.

    Marco,
I just talked to Rich Garland and he gave me some info from his 72 books.
    Here it is.

Conv. tops Sales Code Service Code
    white 1 A
    black 2 B
    covert 5 T
    green 9 G

Vinyl tops Sales Code Service Code
    white 1 A
    black 2 B
    blue 3 D
    silver 4 H
    covert 5 T
    tan 6 F
    green 9 G

We think Covert is sandalwood, but as you see there is no "U" for a vinyl top.
Rich Garland had an idea about that. He remembered that Richard Lassiter's 70 Stage 1 coupe had a "Painted top", not a vinyl top. Lassiter had his car at our restoration clinic in Columbus and when he bought it new he didn't have the extra money to afford a vinyl top, so he bought a painted top instead. His Diplomat Blue car came with all the vinyl top chrome trim and a white painted top. I will bet this 72 Stage 1 Coupe came with an Antique Gold painted top.

    Many thanks again Duane.

Rich L's car has a cowl paint code of 25-10, which would indicate a painted white top instead of a vinyl roof (which would have been 25-A). I'd wonder why 'Antique Gold' wasn't represented as '57' (Flint car).

I'll pass your info along and maybe (just maybe) we'll see this car in Holmdel :Brow:

    Thanks again!

    Marco,
Here is another possibility. All the info we have for reference material is from the beginning of the production year, if they changed a code or added one during production, we would not know it.

If someone has a 72 Vinyl and Trim book it might list it there.

    I've got a 72 color & trim...

    Duane/Marco,
I'm looking in my '72 color & trim...the Exterior Color & Top Selector does not show any code "U" for a vinyl top, code U is only for Antique Gold. Antique Gold was available with the following lower body colors: Regal Black, Arctic White, Sandalwood, Champaign Gold (not available on A bodies). All of the above are "Recommended". Sunburst Yellow was "Acceptable". The above is for a painted top.

    Re: I've got a 72 color & trim...

    Thanks Brad -

The lower body color is Fisher code 65 (Flame Orange), Buick sales code 'Z'. The trim code is 246 (saddle notch back vinyl bench seat).

If it was a painted top, why wouldn't the cowl state 65-57 instead of 65-U? :Do No:

    Another mystery...

Hopefully he'll bring the coupe to the June7 Buick party in NJ.

Ever think that someone made a mistake when they were punching out the ID plate? I have seen plenty of mistakes on Protect-O-Plates, and Original invoices.

How about a SCO??? Could this color be for another GM make (ie Olds, Cad, Pontiac)??? I cannot imagine Flame Orange with a Antique Gold top, yeck. Where can we find vinyl top codes for other GM makes???

hey Marco, does he have any pics of the car?? Would be interested in seeing the saddle against the flame orange.....

Are you sure he read the cowl tag right?? I can't find U anywhere in my chassis manual, guide to book, GM parts book or AMA specs....

    Hi Tim -

I'll ask if he has any pictures. Someone may have some pictures from of the NE chapter GSCA meetings. He's usually there with the coupe.

He says the cowl definitely states 'U'.

    Marco,
I just found the 72 Cisco codes for vinyl/conv tops in my 72 Assembly manual. I was decoding a large buildsheet for John Diaz and stumbled across it. The codes are exactly what I gave you before in the post above. There is no "U" anywhere.
Somebody sneezed while doing the ID plate. They left it there knowing it would create havoc some 31 years later.
