I have an opportunity to buy a 72 455 out of a Electra for a rebuild for 150.00 complete motor or I can stick with the 430. I will eventually put Jim’s diamond pistons, rods and a TA 212 cam for the short block. I’ll most likely use my heads from my 67 430. Outside of the bigger cubes in the 455 are there any other advantages of going with the 455. The motor is for my 67 wildcat
If you are going to stick Jim's Diamond pistons in it, you might as well buy the 72 engine and work on it while you drive the car with the 430. That way, you can take your time and still have the car on the road. Then if you want, go for rods and build a 470 or even a 482. Take your time and do your research here.
My 430 is already out and my wildcat is at the body shop for the next few months. ( until February) the original 430 block is bad according to the machine shop, I have two blocks to pick from that I can purchase from the same person he won’t sell me both. ( sorry for the confusion). At this point I won’t be driving the wildcat until at least next March.
So you have plenty of time. Build a short block with 0 deck. Have the block sonic checked. I would build a 482.
Molnar or Eagle makes rods for our engines. Jim Weise or Gary Paine could tell you. You also need an offset grind on the rod pin of the crank. .15 for the 482. That increases stroke to 4.05. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/482-rods-now-available.324448/
Thanks, does anyone know who could sonic test the block near Brentwood ca. Also Larry, would you recommend using 67 heads from the 430 on a 482. The heads has been rebuilt with basic specs
You can use whatever heads you want. You can also switch over to aluminum heads when you want down the road.
If I get the same year engine block ( casting numbers on the motor) for my 67 Buick will the numbers still match for the car.
