I have a 63 JT code nailhead-where is the starter? Under the engine towards the firewall?
Do I have to do any crazy #&% to remove/replace it like remove an exhaust manifold? Or jack up the engine?
Have the starter, and would love If I could just put the car on ramps and get my bro to help me switch them out. Is it this simple?
I have the 66 shop manual (66 car) and I looked through it a couple of times trying to find the diagram for this-and I didn't find any pics that explicitly show the starter on the engine. Just a diagram for where cables/wiring goes, etc.

Starter is on the drivers side under the exhaust manifold.

    thank you Adam
Do I have to remove the manifold? Or is it free and clear to just get under there and remove it?

On my 57 I had to drop the exhaust out of the way to get my starter out.

  5. Never done a starter on my Nailheads, but stared at it enough from underneath the car.

I've done a starter on a 300, but that is no Nailhead. On that car, the starter just wiggled free.

I'd would give yourself a long afternoon/evening to do it, and have another vehicle ready to drive to the store if you need more parts. Also invite your friend over.

It is only two bolts to remove the starter, plus 3 wires.

    DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY FIRST!

Once you get the wires and two bolts out, you can wiggle it around and see how it comes out. If it gets hung on something, with the starter "loose", you can at least see the minimal you have to take off to get the starter out.

Watch for any shims that fall from between the starter and engine mounting surfaces in the bolt area.
