Just like to get an idea of the performance potential.

Hi Ron, I used to have a stone stock 72 GS350 that had 118k
    miles on it.
The only thing done to the car was a new timing chain/gear.
On a 98 degree July day with crappy air it went 15.06. I can't
remember the mph, but that was an air conditioned car with the
3.08 open rear with a pair of 26.5 Hoosier quick times.
I should also add that that was on my 1st wedding aniversary,
and that my wife was driving. It was her car.
Don't get me wrong, I had tuned the car to run to the best of
    it's ability.
I'm sure that on a nice cool fall day with some better air that the
car would have gone into the 14.80-90 range.

Tom, thanks for the reply. Mine is a little slow but consistent. This car has made me a little lazy. Just changed the easy stuff to make it consistent. That 125,000 was before I started bracket racing it in 1987. It just keeps going. Just a set of valve springs and timing set only internal change. These motors sure amaze me. I've got a motor at the machince shop now, hope to have in for the start of the season. Hope to hear more about your pure stock project. Thanks again.

    J/SA Buick Apollo 350

    Folks,

How about a "Stock Eliminator" 73 Buick Apollo 350. Our best time so far is 11.94 @ 109 mph.

Bored .030 over and the stroke increased .013 ov the allowable .015. "Stock" TRW pistons with 17.3 cc dish which is .070 deep. Pistons are still .010 in the hole at TDC with .041 thick head gaskets. Heads are stock unported units with 52 cc combustion chamber. 50 is minimum. valves are hi-flow stock diameter. We even have to use the 73 only stock cast intake. stock quadrajet carb. TA Perf shafts with stock rockers. The cam is where the power is made. It is stock lift, .392/.408 but the duration is huge!! Duration at .050 is over 255 intake and 267 exhaust. Meziere water pump is a nice self contained unit.

Tranny is a lightweight T350 ATI unit with ATI 4800 stall converter. Rear is a 12 bolt with 4.56 gears and Hoosier 30 x 9 slicks. Car must weigh a minimum of 3420 in J/SA with driver and 3550 in K/SA. VP c-12 is the go juice of choice, with a fuel cell and Holley pump with a Mallory bypass regulator. Mobil 1 10W-30 slippery stuff keeps it together. 160 passes so far, parts look real good. Mobil 1 0W-30 if we need to go faster.

Bored you all enough for now. Good luck with you 350's!!

BTW, we finished 7th in NHRA Stock world points in 2001.

Isaac, That's one sweet ride you've got. I think thats the same car that ran at our local track a couple of times. I use to run stock and superstock, CCChevies then. Do you know Monte Howard and Dennis Dunlap from Div 3. Old racing buddies. Good to see you on this board. Good luck this season.

    Hi Guys,

Ron......That pic's of Coles County isn't it??? I don't know if you remember or not but last year at CC me and one of my best buds , Dan Lobb (Clayton's boy) talked to you briefly there.:) Just wanted to say "HI" again. I may be down there a few times with the Pure Perfomance heads-up crowd. I'll be on the lookout for your car again.

Hi Kerry, how you doin. The picture is from Terre Haute, In. My home track. I just live 14 miles from it. Don't get to CC to often did make the last two races there last year though. I think when I talked to you and Dan must have been a couple years ago. Clayton is my half brother. Haven't seen him for a long time. Is Dan doing any racing, had a Mustang at CC if I remember right. Sounds like you have a couple of awsome rides. Maybe we will run in to each other somewhere this season. Say HI to Dan for me.

    Hi Ron,

The Avtar pic of your car, being so small, it's hard to tell. I've drove by the track in Terre Haute but have never been there racing. Wait a minute......last year me and my buddies (including Dan) did THE fireworks show there for a circle track dirt race. I think it was around the 4th of July. We did so many shows last year I've forgotten which was when. We received national recognition from a circle track magazine over this show, don't remember which one I'm not really into "roundy-round"!!

Anyway, I told Dan you said "Hi" and he said "Hi" back. He hasn't done much of anything to his Mustang GT conv in several years but WE are trying to get him on track!! He's back to being without a girlfriend and is giving up the bar scene.......so I think he'll have a few extra bucks for it now  !!

  10. 72skylark

    72skylark 4 Doors of Fury!

    Good topic-
Well on my only run (other cars kept blowing up on the track, so I only got one run in) I ran a 15.751@88.3 MPH at lebannon Valley dragway.
The car is full wieght 72 4dr skylark, AC, spare tire, and speaker box still in trunk, and me wieghing in at just under 200#'s. The motor is stock 350, 80,000 miles. Stock manifolds, Jet "performance" q-jet carb, MSD with recurved HEI dist, dual flowmaster 2 1/2" exhaust, K&N open element air cleaner,. I rebuilt the trans with a B&M kit, shifts hard, (chirps the tire going into second), I let the trans do the shifting. Stock replacement converter. The rear is a stock open 2.56 unit. I have not played around with jets at all, so there may be a few ponies hiding there. Anyone have any suggestions on jets, I'm not sure which ones I have in there now.

I remember seeing you there that day. I cant remember which car I had there that day. I have a champagne 69 skylark with convo pros and a primered 70 with a 72 nose and no front bumper. Do you remember either one of those cars. If I remember right my friend with a maroon 73 regul was talking to you. We are both from Bristol CT. Was it BOP day?
Bye the way the 70 is grey Jeff

jsacharko- if your talking to me-I think I do remember seeing you there. or a car like your's. Would have been the 70. Did it have a gold hood? I remember seeing 2 skylarks there. It was just a regular test and tune day. I don't believe I talked to anyone else though...
If that is your car where did you buy it from, cause it looked like the car I bought a fiberglass GS hood off of.

    gotbuick What, me worry?

    Hi Ron,
    Just my .02 cents here.

I have found a real key to the 350's in stock form is gears. My first car was a 70 Skylark that had so many miles on it that the valves floated at 4,000 rpm. I installed a 3:08 open rear end from a 71 GS I had and went 15.48 in Drive. I think you will notice a huge difference with this change. Freeway speeds are still good too!

    Nick,
Thats my car. The car is from arizona. You might have bought the hood from my friend in East Hartford, are the corners all broken. He had a skylark that looked similar to mine.

    Nick,
That was a brand new hood until he took the car for a ride without the hood pins! Maybe we will see you at the track.

    Hey Ron Lobb,
That is indeed the car from your area. We bought it just a year ago from Tommy Pettigrew. Monte Howard has driven the car a few times out there. I have talked to Monte a number of times. As soon as we get a new carb, I'm going to try to get him to go over it. :Brow: I think that Tommy had that car run a best of 11.86. Hopefully we can get it back to that quick and maybe quicker.

    Oh well, back to work.

We were at Bristol mid-Oct. last year for the final NHRA Div. 2 event. (went 4 rd.s, lost to a 87 Regal), and I believe that there was a BOP race the following week there. Would have liked to of stayed, but we were chasing NHRA points at the time. We went on to Dallas.

BTW, my uncle, Jim Zane won a Buick event in late Sept. ?? with his Buick V6 powered naturally aspirated 252 ci Chevy S-10. He runs in NHRA's SS/TD class and hold the National record with it. 10.13 is his best @ 132 mph.

We will see what the late season race schedule looks like. LOVED Bristol in mid-Oct.!!!!!! And a quick 8 hr trip down Rt. 81. :pp
