    tubecatgs Finally a 4 speed......

When I added headers to my mildly built 350 I bought an economy Pypes 2.5 dual exhaust system with x pipe. It came with their Violator mufflers. The sound is very high pitched, loud and harsh... nothing like i expected. What is an affordable muffler that might be a direct repalcement? I think the violators are 14 inches long. Is Magna Flow the way to go or Flowmaster? Daily driver and on a budget.

    Thanks

Thanks all. I see the specs on the Dynamax and seems like price is right...

Sean, what series Magnaflow do you like?

I also have the Dynomax 17749 with a 2 1/2 in. exhaust and love the sound. They are much better than the Flow-masters that were on the car when I bought it. They droned so bad I couldn't hear myself think.

Any of the above suggestions are good EXCEPT for the Flow Maters

Walker Dynomax-they’re quiet and mellow, only loud when you’re on it hard, and flow better than almost everything else out there, especially the Floormasters. The 17749 are about 20”; the shorter one is 17734 (or 17743?)

My old '71 GS 455 had Magnaflow mufflers with 2.5 exhaust, crossover pipe, M/T Super Scavenger headers, N-25 exhust tips.

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

I have a pair of Dynomax 17749's on my 1964 Skylark with a nailhead, and it is fairly quiet but "noticeable" at idle and low speeds. (2-1/2" and H)

It has a bit of drone at 1900 RPM, but the nailhead does not see much at that RPM, so it is not a problem.
And they do not have that thin, raspy metallic sound.

They make all the noise you need for scaring elephants and ponies.

When I had the 2 1/2" exhaust on my car, I used the Walker 17749. Loved that muffler for all the reasons stated by others. When I went to 3" exhaust, I went looking for a muffler with the same characteristics, relatively quiet at idle and cruise, but let you know they were there at wider throttle openings. I started asking guys at my local cruise meets, and listened to the mufflers on their cars. Magnaflow was my final choice, specifically the 14264. It has the same characteristics as the Walkers. It's about as quiet as you can expect from a 3" system. I have an X pipe as well.

I had magnaflows on my car at one point. Audible but not loud by any means at idle, surprisingly quiet at cruise, but definitely barked when you lay into the go pedal. I have a nostalgia thing with flowmasters so ended up pulling the magnaflows off, as what sounds "best" is VERY subjective, but they we're nice mufflers. I threw them on the shelf in case I ever wanted to put them back on though.

The Dynomax Ultra Flow version breathes like a straight pipe. More expensive and louder though.

My 69 with Mickey Thompson headers T/A 2.5" and Dynomax 17734 2.5" short mufflers.

I have been using the Dynomax mufflers for years and really like the deep sound.
