I was wondering what carb i should get for my nail, I'm leaning towards a 750 cfm double pumper from quick fuel (I can get Quick fuels way cheaper than Holleys with the same features). I'm looking for something with drive-ability but also puts out at the wheels. Any suggestions or ideas?

It wont be long before Doc checks in on this one, but I'll beat him to the punch by throwing this out there:

QUADRAJET, all day long! Love my Q-Jet set up and it seems to give the best of all worlds - good mileage, great throttle response, great cold weather operation, better top end, easily tunable, great sound and looks factory stock, cause it is. I cant say exactly how much cause I made some changes all at once, but between that and bigger exhaust I dropped 2-3 tenths from my ET's.

Too be fair, I wasnt able to try Tom's Holley set up back to back with mine and give a comparison. Thats said, you can probably pick up a Q-Jet core and manifold and build it for less than a new carb...it just wont be as shiny!

I'd go with an 850. Nailheads like a lot of CFM. I'm running a Holley 850 DP on a setup that is less built than yours and I'm happy.

Yup, Doc will tell you which Holley to use. I have a 650 Edelbrock on my .030 over 425 and Tom Telesco thinks that it is under-carbureted. I think he's right. My long-term fix will be a stock dual quad setup, but I am missing the rear carburetor.

I like my 750 CFM Edelbrock that I put on my bone stock 401 that has 102K miles. As received it was a little rich, but I ordered a tuning kit and have it running well. I can help you with a good starting point for your jetting if you go that route. The great thing is that the carb fits the early manifolds and is a modern version of the Carter AFB that a lot of nails were originally equipped with. If you want adjustable secondaries go with the AVS series.

First off , you cant pay no attention to what Rhett and John says,,,,:laugh:

Depends on what you want to do.... if you want to stay with basically what you got and not make many mods to the system.... mods usually cost money..... then go with one of the ebrocks..... if you already have a carter/sq. bore intake....
I will say that no matter what you use, it will be worth all the effort to fab up a Doc dual plane and a cold air pkg.....
now all that said,,,, if you are looking for performance/reliability/ good mileage, ect... go with a holley.... I have used several holleys over the years.... from a bone stock 600 to a modified 600 to a 850 and finally a 950 and a 1050 three barrel.....
all of them for what they were performed well without doing any thing but fine tuning them....
I am not a qjet man.... but I am a spread bore man.... they are good for cruising.... run on the eye droppers untill you kick it ,,,,, then dump it in..... good set up... but I would go with a 600 holley spreadbore..... with vac secondaries.... i had one on a 70 455 stage 1.... picked up 3 mpg over the stock qjet.... went from 10 mpg to 13 mpg,,,:laugh::laugh: big wow....
on a stock 401 you should get good all around performance and economy if you set the whole pkg up right.... I have a riv that has a 425 with ddp intake/cold air air cleaner and a 670 cfm holley... it gets 18 mpg on the highway and has good performance.....
if you want to get richer than that go with webbers.....
Who is Rhett and John anyway?????:laugh::laugh: Oh yeah,, they are them two guys that wishes they were running holleys.....

Beautiful, like fine art! Did you polish that yourself, or did you plate it?

I'm running the 1411 Performer carb with the following setup:

    Primary jets: .104
    Secondary jets: .101
    Metering rods: .070 x .042
    Step-up springs: standard
    Accel pump: middle position

This is a full 2 stages lean from the out-of-the-box settings for the 1411. I started with the new carb and the 1489 tuning kit and added the smaller secondary jets as needed. My elevation is about 2200 feet above sea level.

I have polished it myself, couple long winter evenings. Now i want to plate it satin chrom. Bad news for me is, that this carb ain't gona sit on my nailhead. It's badly warped etc, but i just scored some nice 7041305 core from ebay. Looks like replacement carb for 67' 430 engines:cool:.

And thanks for appreciating hard job.:kodak:

    Peace Kacper.

Thats a good carb, the 7041305. I've got a 7041304 - they're service replacement carbs, probably manufactured in the early 70's (71?) - they cured alot of the issues that the 66 and 67 Q-Jets had . Show us a picture when you're done!

I have had a Quick fuel 950 on 3 diffarent nailheads and they all liked the carb. I never tried the Q-jet yet and its been setting on my shelf for 10 years. I just really like the quick fuel.

I was reading over alot of old Kenne-Bell literature that came with my 73 - and they were very big on the 9800 series Thermoquad for nailheads, mounted on 66 Q-Jet manifold. The prior owner of the car followed the KB speed recipes to the letter, and the car came with a 70's vintage TQ I havent even begun to play with. For unknown reasons, he replaced the TQ with a Holley 4165 in the early 80's.
