Back in the day?? Red? Yellow? Or White? Leaning toward yellow as the Ladder bars will be yellow with black front brackets..
White, Everyone in my area painted their front and rear brake drums white, and put Cragars on if they could afford them. I could not afford Cragars so I bought Keystones, which at the time looked almost the same as Cragars. I can remember taking the wheels off every 3-4 months to repaint them so they looked good. Even some of the Big names were doing it. Maybe that is why we wanted them. People didn't get into all the crazy colors until way later. Here is a pic of a 67 Chevelle SS in front of Baldwin Chevrolet in 1968. Duane
I liked body color on my blue '66. Been that way since 1982! My 67 Fairlane had yellow traction bars and drums were painted Ford blue. I'm thinking the trend was white, but I usually don't follow trends... If I did, I'd have a Camaro instead of my Buicks.
When my Firebird was in primer in mid 90s my original idea was to paint the car canary yellow with traditional flames therefore I had the yellow drums showing through the chrome weld five stars. Here is an old pic of my old wheels circa 1999. Of course I didn't paint it yellow had to go black with the ghost flames.
And paint the rear diff white too! Before I turned 16 I worked on a friends '67 Mustang Fastback. His older brother had the 66 GS I ended up buying just before I turned 16. Crager S/S's were on nearly everything. Keystones and alum slots were other popular choices.
Mine were fluorescent orange, and still are on one car. Some were also blue, green, or red but all fluorescent. Very bright colors that somewhat matched the car.
Drums and calipers. School Bus Yellow!! Really ties everything together!lol I’ve done red and black though recently. Black these days
Well, for the most part, you wont see my drums or discs ,but I'll paint them to match my ladder bars. I was thinking since my car is Seamist green, yellow or white would look best.I have a bunch of stuff going to the powder coater and getting them done. I have decided to keep the chrome thing going under the hood as I am putting the new Chrome Stage 1 valve covers on and saving the Edelbrocks for the moment.I am hoping to go to Carlisle and locate an aluminum rear cover for a 10 bolt, but am not holding my breath. That seems to be my toughest challenge. I refuse to pay $200 plus for one..One will show up eventually..These are the wheels I will be running.Luckily for me,my drums are very clean so paint will look good.
The rears are 15x10 with 5 in Back spacing the fronts are 15x3 1/2 They are really nice too..No damage and really clean.Glad I kept looking..
Around here back in the day the popular choice was white. In fact, a guy that lived down the street from us had a bought a brand new Sapphire Blue'67 GS 400 4sp coupe that he used to paint the entire undercarriage white, EVERY week or two it seemed. Gas tank, wheel wells and drums for sure, don't remember about the front suspension and steering gear but everything visible from the rear or sides was white. Crazy! A lot of guys would would also have their cars with the big rakes on them and white wheel wells highlighted with colored light illuminating them similar to this one that also came in blue, green, etc.. I wish I would have taken pictures of that Blue '67 back then but, I was only 11 and didn't have a camera anyway.
Factory painted them black when sport wheels were ordered. They specified paint only needed to last a few hours. Probably just until poor saps that bought them drove them home.
