Yea, my carb def doesnt have the filter in it or the spring, im guessin thats not good Also, to add to the great news, the right bolt that holds in the fuel pump wouldnt tighten, i pulled it out and it had pieces of timing cover on it. The bolt stripped the inside of the hole, on the right bolt only. I noticed there was a little gas under the fuel pump and on the gasket. Would this cause the no gas to the carb too?
Called NAPA, Advance, Autozone. None had the fuel pump in stock. So i just ordered one from Autozone for like $25. It comes in saturday. In the meantime, what should i do/test? Cuz im not going to school tomorrow. So im still not exactly sure what the problem is. So its not the carb cuz i cranked the motor with the fuel line disconnected and no gas came out? There is also no fuel filter and spring in the carb. One of the fuel pump bolt stripped the inside of the timing cover
this maybe really stupid but you said you put new fuel line in. did you run the entire length of the car? if so are you sure you didn't accidentally flip the two hoses around and your drawing from the return line in the tank?
brian. we are all rooting for you! it would be a shame, after all the work you put into it, if your folks made you sell it.
Well i got my new fuel pump and picked up a fuel filter while i was there. They said they didnt have the spring to go behind it. But it just so happened that the other day i bought two carbs off of craigslist the other day, $20 for both. One a 76 buick quadrajet and one a chevy rochestor. Waste of money, good deal? Wasnt really sure but it was right down the road from me. Guy i got them from had a fully restored Plymouth GTX in his huge garage up on a lift. So nice. Anyways i used the threaded rod from the chevy carb for my aircleaner, perfect size. Then i took the main inlet off the buick one i got and it had the spring i needed in there. So i put the fuel filter and spring in my carb. Then installed the new fuel pump, the bolt hole that was supposedly stripped for some reason tightened right up nicely and i made sure not to over do it, but nice and snug. Cranked it a few times and nothin...Figured it might need more to get gas in the new pump, cranked it again and it fired right up. Gas started leaking all over from the bottom of the main inlet of the carb. So i put some thread tape on it and tightened it back up. Fixed the problem immediately. I didnt notice any smoke for a while, but after running for a bit, noticed that good ole smoke out the tailpipes. Checking everything over, noticed that the choke seemed weird. Turns out that there is a hole on the back of the carb that goes down into the manifold, connecting it to the secondary air valve of the choke. So i took a hose fitting thing from the carb i bought above and it fit right in there. I connected a hose between them. It definitely cut down the air noise, but idle or anything else didnt change. Vacuum gauged it around 13, still smoke from the tailpipes. Then noticed that the top carb gasket was again starting to fill with gas. Im thinking it has to be something to do with the needle/float sticking or misadjusted. That it was my Chassis Manual said for carb flooding. So my options seem to be somehow find a rebuilder again to fix my carb, or buy a new one. I want to buy the Edelbrock Performer 750 cfm, which i think is enough for the engine, but costs $270 and i dont have much more than that. My dad said that "buick time" is about over and i am not going to be able to spend money on it becuz i have to save for college, which i start this summer, then fall. So i might have just hit my stopping point on this project. Looking back i wish i would have kept the 2bbl on there, been able to drive it to school all this year, even with the oil leaks, and would've had a good $1000 in the bank saved up.
Your dad really needs to chill out. If he was going to get like this about your car not running he shouldnt have let you start such a serious project in the first place. Your float is slightly sticking, causing the carb to flood. Your motor is smoking because the fuel mixture is so rich. I had the same problem with mine a few weeks ago when I put a new carb on, turns out I had the float on the hangar wrong. You know what the problem is, it is just a matter of getting it fixed.
Yea i do. That was my dads idea a while ago to put that back on. Ive been persistent on getting the 4bbl done
Careful when saying "my car," cuz he never really gave me the car. It was our car together. And i understand that. He always split the cost with me on stuff for appearance wise or maintenence, but said he wouldnt help with "souping it up." which also makes sense. But when i put $1000 in it, it changes a bit if he is tired of it. I hate how i am making my dad sound like a bad guy though. I have lived a spoiled, great life under both my parents. They are both really close to me and i tell them about everything But back to the car, how should i go about fixing it?
Brain, can I UPS you my J.Osborne Q-Jet? I am sick of reading about your carb troubles. I can get it at your door you at the soonest Wed. Consider it me letting you borrow it for now, and if you like it we can work something out. I am going to go ahead and clean it up for you and inspect the inside. Do NOT buy that Edelbrock. You will need a new throttle cable bracket or modify the one you have. Also cut your steel fuel line. In a nutshell, not cool. :beers2:
Lmao, you put brain. But if you really want to and you are sure that that carb doesnt have any problems. I really appreciate it Cason and would owe you bigtime :TU: If you send it ill try not to mess it up  :idea2:
Brian, do you think that you can work on a carburetor? check out your local library and get 2 carbuetor books. Haynes manual is good for just rebuilding information Doug Roe's book Doug's is more of a book about modification but a lot of good information.
