What size and lenght are water pump bolts?

  1. Here is my problem:

    (64 Nailhead)

Previous owner (my father) removes water pump. Since the car sits for the greater part of 15 years, no more bolts. I will be putting another pump on the car, so I need to know the length, size, and thread of these missing bolts. I know most of the bolts are the smaller ones, but there are also a few that go through the pump into the block. Does anyhave have a link or resource so I could get these bolts?

    Bama,
It's pretty straightforward, though I don't have the exact dimensions for you. There's 5 long bolts...5/16x18x3 (maybe 3 5/8ths) one short one about an inch and four or five *20'sx1". Double check by passing a wire through the timing chain cover holes for length. Some are not blind holes and extend into the cooland passages and one into the lifter valley (these 3 need to be coated with permatex #2 the rest antiseize compound). All five long ones are the same. Check the smaller bolts threads to be sure i am right with any old bolt. Use hardened grade 5 or 8 available at any full line auto parts store. Hope it helps a little bit. Steve

  3. I ended up getting some stainless steel bolts off eBay. I didn't need stainless, but he had the kit with all the bolts so I didn't have to do any measuring, returning to Home Depot, measuring again, etc.

Make sure to use anti-sieze on the stainless bolts.

  5. Oh yeah, EVERY bolt I have put back into this motor, no matter where it went, got a little anti-sieze.

Of course, I only had to put the timing cover back on, so it wasn't that many bolts.
