?

what should I do with my '64 Riviera (other than give it to you)

  1. Try to perfect every part of it and restore it

    25.6%
  2. Add a TA performance exhaust, shorty headers, & finned aluminum dress-up parts to original engine

    51.2%
  3. GO all-out with a second engine and make it an insane N/A setup

    7.0%
  4. buy a second engine and build it up for forced induction and go nuts

    16.3%

please voice your opinions and vote... keep in mind that whatever I decide to do, I will keep ALL of the original parts... just in case

How about converting to steam power?

I'm all about doing things on the inside, stock on the outside. Exceptfor exhaust. and valve covers. and tires... :TU:

    I'm going for option 2

I myself am leaning towards #2, but having #4 and being streetable would be nice :Brow:

or i could borrow one of my freind's Doble steam car engines and..... :Brow:

I'm doing a Turbo6 in my '64. It would be awesome if you do a turbo Nailhead in there with EFI. My next choice is dress it up the way you want as such with the TA exhauste and such. Heck if you want to wait you can have mine when I go Turbo6, but that will be a year or more.

so, your going to sell your nailhead, or just the TA parts? :Brow:

a turbo nailhead with the Tec3r system would be fun.. keep the boost at a moderate level hmmmmmm :Brow:

well mostly my TA exhauste which will be customized so the car can ride low without dragging the mufflers on speedbumps. The engine is all original so I will probably keep that in case I ever have the desire to restore it or something.

Keep in mind that the exhaust ports are terrible on this engine, forced induction will be limited for the same reason (not saying it won't make more power, but not like something with good exhaust #'s). Put a 100 shot of nitrous on it.

i wouldn't try to push it any more than one atmosphere (14.7 psi).. I don't like NO2, I'd have to drive over an hour to Reno to get a tank filled.. besides, the whine of a supercharger or the jet engie-like sound of a turbocharger(s) is more appealing to me :Brow: you don't have to get a re-fill when you run out either (other than your fuel tank) :Smarty:

CTX- let me know when you're ready to sell the system... put me first in line... now, is it the TA 2-1/2" mandrel bent system? TA headers also? mufflers?... once again, put me first in line

    thanks,
    wes

QUESTION: where do the guys who run blowers on their nailheads get the parts to do so? (i.e. pistons, cam, etc. etc. etc.)

Sure thing, its not even on the car yet though but I'm going to use it till I go Turbo6. It just the 2.5" mandrel system with Magnaflow 5x8x14 natural Stainless mufflers outback between the rear axle and the bumper since the normal TA kit location the mufflers would drag over bumps. No headers, I need a new exhauste so I got the TA kit instead of getting a muffler shop special. It will probably be around this time next year before my Turbo6 is finished and I've collected all the "known" swap parts like transmission, ECM and harness, frame mounts, motor mounts.....
Amen on the Nitrous, I don't like it beyond some spool help and intercooling maybe on launch, not a primary power adder. I know they make high compression pistons but you are likely going to have to for customs for low compression forgings, most cranks are forged as are the rods. I'd get some Gessler ported heads and you are on your own for turbo headers and EFI stuff. I'm going be putting a Impala SS gas tank in mine so EFI fuel system isn't that hard. My suggestion is to do something like me, build the motor slowly so you can take advantage of time and such on machine work and rare parts as well as technology making stuff for off beat engines and fix the car up the way you want it in the mean time so when it comes time to drop the motor in its the only issue you face rather than stilling having a long list of other unrelated things to try and work out. I suggest Scarebird discs first as an upgrade. Also start planning the locations of things so that you don't have to take things apart too many times.

    Keep you posted,

thanks for the scarebird tip.. checked them out last night... definately going to have to invest in that swap...

now.. the impala tank, is that a "drop in" deal or close to it?

I talked to Dave at TA and he said that no one's really pushed the stock crank or rods beyond their limit :Brow: he also said that they're making a stroker kit for the nailheads.. utilizes .038 over forged pistons, billet rods, and a special cut on your stock crank.. $2000 for rods and pistons and about another $500. to cut your crank... he said it makes somewhere near 455ci out of a 425 he also said it would raise torque quite a bit, not so much HP, but it would also LOWER those figures in the RPM range... said that you could also use the 455 sfi balancers (i'd like to get a internal balance :Brow: ).. just the timing marks are on the opposite side

i wonder what kind of HP and torque a forced inducton stroker nailhead would make :Brow: :eek2:

DOES ANYONE MAKE PERFORMANCE INTERNALS FOR THE REAREND IN MY CAR??

'65 Riviera GS is about the only thing "performance" available for the rear end and there is nothing aftermarket available for the rear. There are some relatively rare steeper gears out there for the diff, as well as somewhat easier to find posi's but you are pretty much stuck with OEM stuff for the rear end. My posi rear will be up for grabs when I fab up the 8.5" 10-bolt for the car but thats likely to be almost 2 years before I get to that stage of my project. If you want selection I suggest an aftermarket rear and with the 3-link rear suspension leaf spring rears are going to be easier to adapt since all the suspension mounts are on the axle tubes and the springs mount on the lower control arms.

kewel, thanks... where might I find a posi unit?

as for your fuel tank... will it be a "drop in" type of deal? or will you need to modify the tank to fit?

also, you said that you were going with an aluminum radiator?.. where did you aquire that from, if I may ask?

    thanks,

    wes

it sure would be nice if someone made aluminum heads for the nailhead... I guess when pigs fly

Posi.... salvage yards... Rancho Riviera, Wheatbelt Buick come to mind.

Haven't done the tank swap yet so that will be coming up once the exhauste is in. As far as I can tell it will be farely simple to mount the straps and the tank is the right size to fit between the frame rails. The filler neck is going to be a challenge but not bad.
The radiator will be for when I get the turbo6, the Turbo6 and the Nailhead have different radiator outlet sides so kind of pointless to just get a new one for the nailhead.
Right now I'm fighting the front springs and ball joints in fixing the baddly chopped front ones and the ball joint boots I ruined in the process of getting the spring out.

    Cool "Riv"

Wes, looks like a nice one to do a correct restoration on. Being a daul quad car makes it real interesting. AL.

its not a dual quad car, they had chrome aircleaners that were even bigger with 2 snorkles. I'm starting to like the two tone paint but I think I'm going to stick to solid white with rocker moldings for mine. Air Ride will be in order thought, just as much for its handling improvement as for its "profiling" capabilities. I loved my low raked look but the handling is so much better and driving easier with the uncut H2 springs from a '65 GS.
