What is this for? One hoses leads to nothing. I believe it is the one marked carb. I have an aftermarket 4 barrel carb and intake manifold. I must have purchased the car like this. I wonder if it has anything to do with the vacuum and shift point issues I am experiencing my transmission. Is there a way to remove this component entirely?
It's a vapor can or carbon filter can and in and of itself has nothing to do with the Trans unless the vacuum hoses going to and from it are leaking and that will effect a tb400 Trans.
Keep it. The two nipple ones are hard to find, and it keeps the gas smell away. It feeds fuel vapors from the carb back into the carb while it's running and burns them. Yes, it's emissions bs, but it serves a purpose and it does it well, providing it's working. You can cut them apart, add new activated charcoal (I think that's the stuff), and a new filter on the bottom and badda bing brand new.
I didn't have to cut mine apart. I got a new filter pad for the bottom from rock auto, went to the tropical fish store and bought some activated charcoal filter media and dumped it in through the bottom till it was full. Put the filter pad on the bottom to keep it in and all was good.
Your vacuum/ shift point issue is probably due to a vacuum leak, or wrong vacuum routing. When you added the 4 barrel did you check accelorater cable for proper travel? As switching to 4 barrel from a 2 barrel you really need a accelorater cable for longer travel. The 350 trans depending on year and model gets a cable hooked to carb or gas pedal front trans that helps control shift points.
The prior owner had already installed it. How will I be able to quickly check that it has proper travel? Is it possible the Holly carb did not have an input for the canister hose? I think one hose said carb, and the other said tank. The one that says tank disappears under the car near the wheel-well and firewall.
It did seem to help. Before I did it, the gf would complain about gas smell in the garage when I got back from cruising around. Now it just smells like burnt rubber!
I believe the vent just goes to the air cleaner if running stock type air cleaner. . To check for pedal travel have someone step on pedal and make sure the secondary open fully
