What other source is there for a rear end?

TexasT Texas, where are you from

I want to have a 8.5" 10 bolt for my '70 GS. How different is the mid 70s LeSabre? Is there any other 10 bolt that will bolt in? I'm having trouble finding a n A-boby in the wrecking yard. Plenty of the mid 70s LeSabres. What else should I be harvesting from these? Thanks.

Check out the 4 post by VICZZ today. They are 36 pages, only 1/2 of the Houston, Texas auto salvage manual, of Houston's bone yards. I will post the other half of the manual tomorrow. There are 100s of yards in this manual, they ship, the use the parts locator, which contacts all of the other yards for a part you may need, it lists their specialties, phone numbers and addresses, 800 numbers but some of the area codes to "281"

I will post the other half of the manual tomorrow!!!

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

You need a rear from a 71-2 Skylark or Cutlass. Other A-body models can have the 8.2" You should have no problem finding one of them here or on www.442.com

Always smart in the fresh-kill yards to jack the old Skylarks & Cutlasses up & ck their r/e's to even see if they even are an original 8.5. The daily drivers, that are ending up for sale in the paper, or today in the yards, ie, often the "brotha's in the hood" junk to some kid's high school ride. Best of all, they often have had their r/e's swapped, disc brakes spindles chewed up, sagging or cracked frames, 1/8" bondo skimmed from one bumper to the other :( Best advice, if one is paying good money for something, really know what you're buying, do your homework.

How extensive a problem... over the last 15 years, I 've prob had 4 dozen '71-72 8.5 A-body rearend core r/e's sold to me, or traded in by locals, no wrenching to get them out, & seldom more money than local Pick-N-Pull price. Often these rears came out of a '71 or 72, that the owner swapped in some form of early ten bolt just because as a pegleg r/e, the earlier r/e was a little lower ratio (say a 2.93 vs the original 8.5's 2.56), or the pinion seal was leaking on the 8.5, & owner did not have the ability to propperly r/r the seal.

Trying to keep these old cars on the road, the owners seldom, if ever, knew the 8.5 was a superior r/e design, instead they were only intersted in short term satisfaction. Let's face it, when these terd driver cars reach the end of the road, they often end up in salvages, & then eventually these (8.2 or type O) r/e's gets pulled & sold for no other reason that they "came out of" a '71 or '72 Cutlass or Skylark, not because they were actually an 8.5 A-body rear.

    Have fun.

Not in the great state of Texas, but... just a few e-Bay follies that are ending soon. Don't y'all just love :pp e-Bay?

    12 bolt Chevelle rear :pp

A quick glance will note it's a dime a dozen pegleg type "O" Olds 10bolt (12 bolt cover), not a Chevelle or GTO 12 bolt as advertised. Best of all, some fool just bumped the reserve @ $150 :Do No:

Love the description on the next one by same seller, let's all e-mail & ask the seller if it will fit in our '70 GS's :spank: :pp

"This is a 3:08 Posi rearend from a early 70's gm.The only I found on the housing is 1243774.On the gears are 3984828 13:40 12 72. backing plate tp backing plate is 55".

Inner shock mounts & design of the center housing pegs this r/e as a '73+ Chevelle 8.5 c-clip rear. Between the backing plates, the '73+ A-body 8.5 rears are 56.25", not 55". Upper mtg ears are much wider & will not fit in '64-72 A-body.

    Gotta run

TexasT Texas, where are you from

    Hey viczz

I just noticed you are up north there. I used to live in Burlington, WI near Bohner's Lake. Made it out to GLD once, and what a wild scene that is. I'm still looking for the same here. Maybe when the weather cools more will come out. There are a bunch of wrecking yards here but most of the early stuff has already been crushed. Kind of hit and miss as to what comes in. I've got several on the look out for Buick stuff and saving it for me. I did come up with some pretty nice 15x7 ralleys. Thanks for the input.
