Hello, my diff was shattered 2 days ago so now I need the whole rear end. First of all, I cannot find one in the Raleigh, NC area and I cannot rebuild because there is a huge hole in the diff. What modern or other GM rear end will be plug and play, I prefer it to be posi, but I can live without it.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

There is no Modern bolt in rear,...I'm in Spartanburg about 5hrs away and have a few 8.5 rears none are posi,..we have two forum members that have,..build and ship 8.5s for around $1800 to 2k

    I'll sell a complete 8.5 open for $375

By modern, do you mean aftermarket?

What exactly shattered, and what exactly got damaged?
    I sell complete rebuilt 8.5” 10-bolts,all new parts,for $1400.0 plus freight.
You can upgrade to Moser 30-spline shafts, and it would be $1800.00 plus freight.

@Brian, I was driving at low speed ( 25mph) and heard a big boom and when I parked I looked underneath the car and the diff was leaking and had a hole in it. So, I need to replace the whole rear end.

@hugger, does that include the whole rear end or just the diff?

I guess, my 2nd question would be, what other GM rear end will fit my 72 Buick?

What you need is called a rear end assembly "drum to drum".

What's the difference between a modern rear and what came in your 72?

Your rear is fairly common as it was used in 71 - 94??? Buick Chevy Pontiac and Olds midsize cars. and Jimmy/Blazers (check the width though) Is there a scrapyard near you? Worth a look. or Hugger's - only 5 hr drive.

Virtually any rear from a 64-72 A body (Chevelle/Cutlass/Lemans/Skylark) will bolt in. The original rear in your car should have been an 8.5 if it was a 10 bolt rear. That is an excellent tough rear, hard to believe you grenaded it like that unless it was very low on oil. Some Skylarks came with a Chevy 12 bolt. Count the rear cover bolts.

    I have a 71 rear,all done up,ready to install,with 373 posi,new gears,it was used in my son's car for about 50 miles,he found out that I had a 342 71 posi,that's what came with his car new,so we exchanged rears.I want $1.000.00 for it,plus shipping.This is guaranteed to work good.as I already know it does.Bruno.

Get a GM Corp 8,5 A-body specific. 28 spline will be just fine into the 12s , possibly high to mid 11s. Get a posi with gears specific to your driving style, ie:, street, hiway , track. Talk to Brian Trick. JDrace (monzaz) to get parts for rebuild or be prepared to pay $1000-$1800 for a rebuilt plug n play. Jim

Never blew a hole in a RE. Most damage I ever done to one (besides trashing the life out of the truck) was I lost the pinion nut and the pinion jammed into the ring. Locked up the rear wheels at about 35mgh. Funny thing broke a few gears in half pounded the pinion back in drove that truck till the motor died.

It sounds like the cross shaft came out and went through the cover.
    Do you have any pictures?

Local yard to me has several 71/72 Skylarks with standard rears. They would need freshening up (new seals, brake cylinders, brake shoes). Last time I checked he only wanted $275 for complete rear. Probably lower! I'm on good terms with all 3 generations that work there. PM me if interested...(click on my icon to link to me, then "Start conversation")

Gtivalencia34, Steve Covington is not but about 2 hours out of Raleigh and he knows some great yards to get parts from. Get a truck and go down to pick one up.

If you want the better rear, you need a 71-72 A body set up.
