What is this piece in the trunk

    Was looking in the trunk of my 72 skylark towards the quarters and saw this piece, i have no idea what it is and it appears to have had possibly seam sealer holding it to quarter panel from by the trunk lid hinge tower. What is this piece?

    The seam sealer did look like a bologna sandwich lol but why did the factory put something like that there

    It is an added brace up to the body panel. It was there to stiffen everything up in that area, and they did it that way so there were no welds to the outside panels that would require bodywork.

    Okay thanks duane i had no idea they put braces there
