Gathering up parts to start rebuilding the convertible top which is all in pieces and was going through some old pictures and noticed this cloth type edge seal that goes on the front header bow pinch weld seam. I don't seam to have the old one for reference (think is was all mildew and rusty and got tossed) but need to know what this is referred to as or where I can source a new one. Tried searching all key words to find on web Maybe a upholstery item? Thanks in advance
Ya, a new one typically comes when you have a top installed.. so check with an upholstery shop or parts source. JW
Windlace works and got me closer to finding the right stuff, checking with the upholstery guy if he has the correct cloth type.
It is called wind lace or pinch welt. The closest looking thing I have found, and it does look pretty good, is the wind lace for a 67-68 Mustang. They sell 2 different versions, the standard reproduction, which looks totally wrong, and the premium/original style reproduction that looks nice. They sell it by the foot, so measure what you need and go for it. Duane
Terry, Yes it is Vinyl with a steel internal ribbing. The GM originals I believe were black cloth with a steel internal ribbing. What you have in your pic is how it looks after it is old and faded. This is the closest thing that is available and will last a lot longer. I have used it on quite a few convertible tops for my own cars, and once installed looks really good. Here is the url address for 1 supplier, I am sure there are more out there. https://www.cjponyparts.com/scott-drake-windlace-16-foot-concours-pvc-black-1965-1968/p/SDWLB20/ I used to buy this by the foot, but this is for a 16 foot roll. If you get the roll you could split the cost between several guys. I think you can get 3 pieces out of the 16 foot length. I will post a pic as well. The other stuff is pretty smooth and resembles the 65-66 mustang wind lace and looks completely wrong for this application, but a lot of the upholstery shops used that because it is cheaper. Duane PS. One other thing, do not cut yourself short on the length of the piece. Make sure it goes the entire length it is supposed to go, and trim off any "steel" that sticks out of the ends when you cut it. Other then that it goes on real easy.
Thanks again. I was on that site but must have been looking at the wrong thing but I will give this stuff a try.
Here is another thought. If you really wanted to get crazy you could probably wrap this (or the standard pinch welt for that matter) in a black cloth. It would probably look even closer to the original, but I don't know how long it would last. Duane
