Hi folks, getting ready to fire up my new engine and the compression is pretty high. Need to find the battery with the highest Cold Cranking Amps. Would like to find one with at least 850. Thanks in advance! --Ranger Aiken, SC
group 34 battery is 800 cca https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/...2836/battery/34ext/4742481/1971/buick/skylark Have you thought about a gear reduction starter? http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/reviews-for-robbmc-starters.325646/#post-2744814
thanks! What are the size differences between 24 and 34? I assume it will fit? Yea, got a mini starter off the V-6 Turbo site years ago and pretty sure it's gear reduction. --Ranger Aiken, SC
With that starter you got from the V6 site, make sure your initial timing isn't too high, upon cranking to start, if you have any kick back it WILL break the nose cone, I had that happen on my 350. I put the big, heavy, durable high torque GM starter back in Remember, the V6 Turbos run lower compression.
Thanks. I'm sure the bigger starters are also not immune to cracking the nose cone with a backfire--don't ask me how I know!
Red top optima is my go to, the "Super Start gold" deep cycle battery is a good one too it's like 900 or 1000cca I. The stock size
Hugger, who makes/where can I get the Super Start Gold? BTW, if you are who I think you are, you came to my house and bought an undersize crank pulley coupla years ago?? Best, Ranger Aiken, SC
Ha, you can run but you cannot hide!! Will PM you shortly. Hope you, wife, and dad have been well. Merry Christmas! Ranger Aiken, SC
Well, I may be thinking about when they first came out, but were there not, at least initially, problems with the Optima?? --Ranger Aiken, SC
I don't know anything about that here. I've got them in two of my restored cars and wouldn't have anything else. On my current project the battery will go under the seat laying on it's side. These batteries are "dry cell " totally sealed AGM type so no acid to top up or spill. The yellow one really spins. They hold their charge for long periods and don't go flat ( dead / sulphate ) like normal wet cell batteries. They come available up to 900 CCA Yes they are more expensive but for the longevity worth it in my opinion.
Hugger, I can't figure out how to PM on this new website format. Tried calling both the phone numbers on the card I got from you in 2012 but couldn't get thru. Could you please PM me (maybe that will show me how to do it) or call me at 803-645-9156? Thanks! --Ranger Aiken, SC
Click on persons avatar or name, click on start a conversation(same as PM) when info box pops up and your off to the races......
Thanks, StageCat, I tried that yesterday and wasn't sure if the "start a conversation" was the same as PM so I didn't go though with it. Thanks again! Ranger Aiken, SC
