Well, it's been a while since i've posted here, and I need to let the steam out anyway. I was driving along main street, had my grandpa in the car, just put some gas in it and went for a single stroll, just killin' time and burnin' gas, as there is nothin' else to do at the time. On the way home, while still on main street, a red Mitsubishi 3000 GT pulls out of the local McDonalds and and slowly creeps up to 45 mph.(the speed limit) I am kind of checking the car out since you don't see many of those around here in Iowa, and it had Illinois plates on it so I knew they weren't from around here. At any rate, I notice the car has a black tinted rear window that's blacker than black, and the side windows are tinted as black as the rear window. Anyhow, I cruise along with them 'till we hit the next stop light and I pull along side them. They rolled their windows down and first thing I see is 2 guys sitting in the front, both look like they are in their mid to later teens, and a hott blonde chick is sitting in the backseat lookin' at my car and looking at me as well, I thought to myself, "dayum she's hott", but my main focus had to be set on the road ahead. So, they pull off the line about the same speed I do, we cruise on up to 20 mph, I keep my eyes on the road in front of me, then I stare over at them and next thing I know the driver mashes the gas and bangs through all of his gears, which at that point I had realized they ain't got an automatic trans. Next stoplight we hit, I look over and the 2 guys are talking to each other in low voices and I see the chick leaning up in the seat staring at me again and I look over and smile at her and she smiles at me and then I am thinking that I had better see what these guys have in that car anyway. The light turns green and I start out w/ my car in drive and keep up and don't gain anything while they are in first gear, but he shifts to second and I catch up a little bit but before I even think logically, my dumb as heck self decided to down shift, I meant to keep it in L2, but accidentally slipped it in to L1, and the car bogged way down, vibrated heavily and squeaked like a helluva mo-fo, I realized what I had done and shifted it back up in to drive, asking my grandpa what the heck the car did that for, at that point I realized something must be wrong with my trans., and while I had my mind on the car and transmission acting up, the Mitsu had already left us in the dust. I should have just left it in drive, I know I could have stood a better chance anyway as I would have gained little by little on them everytime they shifted since they had a manual trans. and seemed to quite a bit of range between each shift. But no I had to downshift.:idea2: Bad idea, now that I know I don't have a first gear. It won't even pull much at all from a dead stop in L1, and when you do step on the gas lightly in L1 it squeaks and when you shift to L2 it bangs into gear which it shouldn't do either. I always wondered why I could only feel and hear the trans. shift once, I guess now I know. I have a 3 speed TH-350 tranny that only has 2nd and third gear. That might explain why it doesn't pull as hard off the line as I think it should. Those Mitsubishi 3000's are rare around where I live. Only 2 that are in existance in this town that I know of, only seen a few more in other towns and areas outside of this one so they are rare around these parts. Looked something like the picture attatched:

Yea, you should have left it in D even if you do/did have a low gear. Lesson for the day, leave it in drive. As long as your downshift/passing gear works properly, you're fine.

Could put a shift improver in it to give it firmer shifts, which is a benefit for a longer lasting trans and better response.

You're lucky you didn't drop the tranny right there on the spot.........at least you made it home and it still drives........better get a new tranny. If it's slipping that bad somethings roasted and you'd be just wasting :dollar: on a shift kit. My grandpa would have kicked my azz for doing that with him in the car. Don't feel too bad though, some of those cars can really go. :)

Yeah the twin turbo all wheel drive versions of those cars are very fast. Stock for stock it would run right along with a Stage car. Being all wheel drive, one can get one hell of launch. Very fast cars. I've seen modified daily drivers running 11s at the track, on street tires..:eek2:

but before I even think logically, my dumb as heck self decided to down shift, I meant to keep it in L2, but accidentally slipped it in to L1, and the car bogged way down,

    sigh.

if you KNOW you're going to race, launch in first and then bump the shifter forward for each up shift.

or just leave it in Drive as the others have been saying.

manual downshifting at WOT is a Really Bad Idea.

you can do it in a roll on contest but you still need to be really careful, especially if you're at highway speeds. 60mph in first is not a good thing either.

Well I had my tranny rebuilt about 2 years ago, still pretty fresh with under 12 thousand miles on it!:eek2: I think something happened to it when we did the engine swap, as the trans. shifted perfect and did have a first gear when I got it back from my mechanic, and after I did the swap, the trans. now leaks fluid and doesn't seem to have a first gear, in drive or in low 1st.(L1) The engine is also leaking oil and I need to look into that as well this spring/summer. Getting terrible gas mileage too which might clue me in as to wether or not I need to tune the carb. or not, as the timing was set by a reputable mechanic, although I guess it still never hurts to check all those simple things first. If it needs tuning, who knows, it might improve gas mileage plus performance too, wouldn't that be a blessing!? Probably will upgrade to a 4 barrel carb. and aluminum intake this summer though, definetly craving more power already lol! But of course, not before I get the leaks fixed at least, and hopefully my trans. will hold up for a while. I'm more worried about just keeping it reliable than I am performance savvy, for now anyway!:TU: I'd still like a second chance at the race, even if I still would lose again, at least i'd like to have a prepared strategy anyhow, so I could say at least that I lost fair and square, and not by a dumb mistake.:Dou:

'71buickg.s. a dark and stormy night..

youre getting terrible milage because your car has been starting in 2nd gear.

and if the 3kgt you raced at the same wing on it as the picture you posted, you should never have bothered.. 300hp, twin turbo v6 + awd is pretty tough to beat with a small block.. very few mods put the vr4's into the 11's.

more than likely though, it was just an NA fwd pos, that you probably wouldve beaten if you had 1st gear.

That would be a good place to start, for sure! Carb. still may need some fine tuning though, have to get a vaccum guage and get a reading to see where I am at and then find out where I should or need to be at, or I could just wait until I get the 4 barrel setup on it.

I don't think this one had the 300 HP tt v6 in it, if it did then it probably would have been a few stop lights ahead of me instead of a few car lengths at the start of my downshifting mistake, lol!:Dou:

Probably, even with no first gear I still should have had him in the bag had I just left it in drive, as he left a lot of hesitation between his shifts.:spank: Oh well, at least it wasn't a Rent-a-Center truck or a mini-van, so it could've been much worse. Those Mitsu 3000's are stealthy-looking though, it's very stylish I think, i'd actually like to see the 300 hp tt version run.:bglasses:

I guarantee that you would have beat him if you had first gear, providing that it was just a 3000gt and not a vr4. My friend at school has both, and the 3000gt may look fast, but it is just another import. The vr4, however, is a rocket. Don't mess with e'm until you have a big block. Anyway, I was going to ask: have you ever thought about trying to rebuild your Turbo 350 at home? I built the one that is in my '67 Skylark to replace the old 2 speed (needless to say, I am very pleased, though I still want a muncie m-22). I built it in my auto tech class at school. They are surprisingly easy to overhaul, and the only special tools you need are two slide hammers, a dial gauge, and a trans seal installer (basically a piece of wire). On another note, you were saying that you want a 4 barrel manifold? I am going to replace my iron one pretty soon, and if you want it, just tell me. Nice talking to you, and nice car.

    See ya,
    -Clay

    Hey Clay,

That's what I was thinking as well, is that I should have had him if my 1st gear was working properly. Oh well, I saw him again when me and a buddy were cruisin' around in an older Dodge diesel truck, too bad we couldn't line up with him in that thing. I think the truck was fast enough to beat him had we lined up with him. Now that I know he hangs around here on some nights such as Friday predominantly, then I might be able to find him again when I get my trans. rebuilt again(wether I rebuild it myself which I am considering actually, or by a buddy) and/or if the 4 barrel comes first. I'll send you a PM on the 4 barrel intake offer! Thanks for the compliment on the car, it ain't the purdiest nor the fastest one in town but it'll hold it's own I suppose:grin:
