Hi there, I was looking over an, let`s say, GM A-Body from the 1968-1972 era, (ok, ist a 1970 SS Chevelle Clone, 454 and manual, haha), and spoted these streaks (see pic) on the mufflers. Had a pair of replacement mufflers in the trunk, didn`t have time to talk to the owner again, but if you check out the attached pics, what would you say? Transmission blew? Engine blew? For me it looks like burnt oil all over those mufflers. Also I saw the rusty spot on the intake manifold, paint crumblin`...what would you say, just from sitting, or did it leak or whatever? The Rochester doesn`t look like the block, it`s not nearly as worn... Couldn`t drive it, but will have the chance in 2 weeks time. Maybe you have an input on the issue! All the best, nice weekend to all of you Jens
The burnt spot on the intake is typical. The heat cross over goes through there and paint nearly always will burn off on a cast manifold. As to whatever is on the mufflers????? no idea. as long as theres no puddles on the ground under the car I'd assume its been fixed.
It just looks like it either had a pinion seal leak at one point, or it's just some road grime on the mufflers. He maybe drove through a puddle of oil or some fresh road construction at one point. Nothing to worry about.
From the right muffler, it looks like it dripped down from above. I'd probably go with pinion seal leak as Lucas mentioned. Definitely odd
Yeah, that pinion seal theory is not too bad...Looks like "it" has been splashed around, only half of that right muffler is streaked and then the pipes...didn`t see oil underneath that car, it had been sitting for some time (enough to get some cobwebbs, at least), but no oily spot underneath that diff. Jens
Ok, went there again, had my GS parked beside the Chevelle (check out the pic). Owner said beforehand he`d get some dealers plates to run the car on the street, that didn`t happen. Instead I was cruising through a housing area...but still. To cut a long story short: car had to roll into action, the starter doesn`t work, I cannot get any block ID whatsoever, I was all over that engine, no chance. So I don`t know if it`s a 396, 402, 427 or that mentioned 454. The Muncie is an 1969 build M20, but the bellhousing belongs to a truck (it`s GM 6263756 or so). I like the colour, the interior looks good, the skin seem quite healthy with only a few places that magnet won`t or nearly won`t stick....but there a quite a few downsides I feel. From what you guys know, what is the price you pay, not from the dealer, but in a private deal from man to man, for a good and healthy clone 454 manual, or an original 396 manual? NOM- BB- engine would be ok, I`m not too much into that. I`m not into buying right now but would like to put that car here into perspective for me! Thanks, have a nice weekend Jens
Not enough pictures to give a good estimate. If the motor is healthy and the interior has been replaced to original and looks good, I'd throw out $15K to $20K. P.S. I'd pay more for the green Buick behind it, by the way.
Hi, yeah, thats right, mine for 10 years, I'm the third owner. But cool nevertheless to hear you guys willing to pay more for the GS than the SS Clone...but remember, the Chevy is a 4 speed. 15-20k seems rather cheap, doesn't it? The Chevelle is an Arlington build Sports Coupe Malibu, SBC by checking on the lower steering shaft, triple green with buckets originally. Seller asks 47000 sFr which is roughly the same in US Dollars. It has a swiss registration which is great...Tech inspection can become a real nightmare around here. Jens
I had a '74 C20 pickup with a 454. The heads are HUGE, way bigger than those on a 427. It needs to be a big block, and the valve covers on those heads will be about 6" wide.
Ok ok....I double check on those muffler bearings I swear.... Lemmy, I can get a pic of the those heads, then you can judge for yourself. But as I've read over there with the Chevelle guys, no visual differences beside the balancer, no way defining it without numbers. Jens
I would say that car is worth high 20's maybe the low 30's from your pictures and description. It''s NOT worth anywhere the 47K asking price.
That's what I thought too. But sellers will add the costs for shipping, import and registration etc. around here sometimes..though the seller did buy it here, it had already been imported to Switzerland around 2010. Thanks for your opinions, it's really helping me making a decision. Jens
