I have a Regal 455 GN rear, and wondered what gear you are running and if you like it? It has a 3.90 in it now and I hate it. Afraid 3.42 will be too tall still? Thoughts? Thanks, Jon
Well 3.90 is a high gear, you will get a good lauch off the line with that high a gear but you will be turning more RPM's at speed. It wouldn't be bad with a overdrive tranny, but with something like a TB 400 without overdrive it could be alittle high for everyday driving. 3.42's are lower and more streetable but you will still get a good laugh off the line with them. I think you will like 3.42's, that's what I'm running with a 455 / TB 400 SP / POSI 3.42 Rear End. I had 4.56's in my JEEP (35" Tires, DT Locker rear / ARB front), that was great for Wheeling but turned a few RPM's at speed, I didn't mind as I didn't go on the highway much with the JEEP.
I have 3.42 in my Skylark, but it has a 28" tall tire. The Regal has 26.5" tire. Makes a difference. I am trying to decide between 3.42 and. 3.23 gears. Thanks, Jon
I can't really tell you much between the 3.23 and the 3.42's but FWIW I have the 3.23 and love the gearing so far. Plenty of accel but still have alot of range in the upper RPMS.
I run 3.42's in my 455 M-21 X-body Skylark. Also in my 454 M-21 El Camino. What do you need for a TH400? A tail housing? What length? I still build a few automatics now and again, I might have one....
I just installed the 3.23 gears and love them. 26" tire. I am still looking for the speedo insert for the th400 that carries the 40 up gears, and a 42 tooth gear. Thanks, Jon
