    George,

According to some information I have, Mallory has a billet Unilite non-vacuum advance distributor - # 372920001 - With vacuum advance #472920001 - Recurve Kit for both #29014. TA Performance was going to start having these on hand according to the same source. If those part #s are not in production yet, Mallory also did a few one-off Unilite distributors as well. Attached is a picture of the one. Its nice!

The Mallory unilite system worked very well for me. You can use your existing distributor and install a kit. My 65 GS had one and worked great.

Your '65 looks almost identical to the one I had except the auto trans. Good looking ride.

Here is a guy that builds "a dedicated, true High Energy Ignition, or a dedicated MSD magnetic pickup trigger-only system, into stock points distributors for American car engines:"

    http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/

The magnetic pick up might be a little more reliable than the Unilite. My guess is this distributor would have a pick-up similar to the old Stinger type.

Yea, send yer Dist to Ignition Dave! He's a cool guy who knows what he's doing and then some! If you plan on a MSD box it'll be cheaper too.

My dist is at his place now with a crane box from jegs on the way soon.

I have both the LSC and Ignitor II Pertronix setups. I personally have never had any problems with them, but the numbers that Dave has, I'm a statistic in the rare section.

Spend the $150 +/- on a dist by Dave instead of Pertronix. You'll be glad you did.

Don, i went with the Mallory kit #501,now my question is,did you need to touch the timing at all?or just left it the same way?

    Thanks

Make sure you add the second ballast resistor to the Unilite power input wire only. Stock resistor for the coil, added second from the coil to the Unilite. Should end up with somewhere near 2.20 ohms resistance total into the Unilite unit.

Unilite conversion does not alter timing, so the wrong curve it had, it still has.

Just FEI (for everybody's information), I do do two different conversions for Nailhead stock cast iron dists, full HEI, uses remote coil as stock does, and an MSD trigger only, connects directly to MSD and other ignition boxes. I do not use PerTronix units to do this, but use over the counter MSD and HEI parts.

My full HEI conversions are just that, a real HEI system.

I am going to return the Mallory kit back, when i spoke to a representative he told me i do not need to pull out the distributor, but in the instructions it says to take out the distributor,i might send out to get a Mallory distributor.

    Thanks

    George,

I am sorry it took so long to reply. I did not recurve my distributor or make any timing changes. I am sure there are some power gains and or some mileage gains to be had. I also did not have to add an additional ballast resistor as suggested. The representative you talked to is correct you do not have to pull the distributor to make the conversion. I only promote these Mallory products because I found something that works well for me. Perhaps you may find something that works better because technology is continually changing. I hope you find a combo that will work great for you, I am always happy to help whenever I can.
