been tuning the single turbo 401 nailhead and wanted to know what you guys are running for total timing.. right now i am running a MSD 6btm box with a msd dist with no vacuum advance and locked out mech advance. i am running a total or 34* and didnt know if anyone is running more than 34*. the a/f are wired up and will be running the motor with them on it tomorrow but wanted to pick some brains on what you are running for your tune. Thankyou i am running a 4150 CSU blow thru carb with ev hat and a1000 areomotive pump and boost reference fuel pump. i also have it setup to pull 1.5* degrees of timing per every lbs of boost. I run 34 if I've got the gas for it, power and ET's fell off at 36. However, car runs great at 32, even 30 isnt bad....
i would say 30/32..... but each engine is a individual,,,, just experiment with it and see what it tells you..... sometimes less is more.....
I had a unique opportunity with my car. I have programmable FI, so I have all kinds of flexibility. I ran the car on a dyno, and did back-to-back runs (about 15 pulls in the day). One of the interesting things I found was that below 4000RPM, the engine liked 35 degrees. Above 4000RPM, it likes 34 degrees. So that's what I programmed it to do. (If you ever get to do a dyno, don't just tune for peak HP or torque- compare all of the curves back-to-back and see how things get affected.) -Bob C.
i ran the the motor a little bit today and set it for now at 32*. i am going to bump it up slowly but because i dont have a start retard hooked up yet it is still tough to start when hot. Spark plugs looked good and motor staied at 180 without the fan hookedup. i had a issue today with the waterpump and it was starting to make a slight bearing noise so i ordered a new one and will be getting that installed and continue working on getting and keeping a safe tune.
