While out for a ride on our Harleys we ended up in Iowa for an overnight stay, while sitting in a little saloon we were talking to a guy and that is what he did, he flew all over the county to do it. I gotta tell ya, he had a very firm handshake...

Graduated in 65 and went to work for a local Buick Dealer. A year later Uncle Sam called. When the opportunity came to go to OCS I did. Spent 3 years including a tour in Viet Nam as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander. Came home and enjoyed the summer. When the cold weather arrived I looked for a job and got hired at IBM as a computer operator. Went back to school almost full time while working full time. Got my Bachelor's in 7 years. Spent a total of 37 years at IBM and retired as an IT Engineer. Been "retired" for almost 10 years now.

Great thread! I started using AutoCAD release 7 back in junior high. Continued hand and computer drafting thru high school followed by architectural and civil drafting at a community college. Then went to a trades school and took building technology. At both schools I ended up basically teaching the cad classes as I was more advanced than the teachers. When I graduated in 96. I started working as a fire protection designer. I worked at that company for 15 years doing design, project management, estimating and eventually area regional manager. I moved to another major fire protection company managing design for central Canada for the last 7 years.

There is also a thread running just like this one on the PY forum. I enjoy reading what everyone does for a living as well. Your comment about compassion for animals is "spot on" I love them all & have had many rescued dogs & cats. Currently 2 stray dogs & one rescued cat. They are my kids & I love them dearly.

I opened Bill's Auto Works in 1983 as a body shop, southern body parts sales & vehicle transport company. I got rid of the employees & transitioned into custom paint/restorations when I bought acreage with a large shop & house on the property about 15 years ago. At that time the parts business was dropping off & the transport side was taking over everything. I currently have not done a customers paint job or restoration in the last 10+ years & have a hard time doing my own because I am on the road so much!

    God bless

Then 7 yrs in Hvac and refrigeration, commercial.
The last 3 yrs in refrigeration, building relationships and a stand up reputation along the way.
Now Im about to start doing Home inspections. For the purpose of every inspection gets exposure and I hand out a business card for Hvac repairs. After a couple yrs I should be able to be a one man show like Briz.

Find a nitch others don't want and it can be really good. Like Steve says there is good and plenty of bad, you gotta be able to operate long enough to build a customer base where you can weed out the bad ones.

Rachael (my wife) and I did that; had customers (12 years of service) who were loyal, allowed us to make some money and trusted us. When we just flat got too old (started too late) and had to close I tried to sell it offering to stay on for a few months to get a new owner aquainted with whomever but no one wanted it; some customers pleaded with us not to close. Offered a turn key one/two person (family) show that grossed $135K/$150K a year with expenses around $35K/year for a 40-50 hour week with a $35K buy in for truck, equipment, supplies and tools (I would have financed it) with a loyal customer base and not one taker. We made a very comfortable living doing our own thing. Very few want to entrepreneur anymore. Downside to a one man show is you will never take a day off or a vacation again when you want to; worked many a Christmas, New Years, 4th of July or...
