I just picked up a 67 model gs or what I think is a skylark. it was on ebay a couple weeks ago. the front grill has gs badge as well as the rest of the car. it also has a 400 that the seller told me was matching. after looking at the car I didn't see the gs on the dash and it has no hood scoops.. also the tag says its a special so it has me puzzled. what do you guys think?

You have to post the vin tag numbers. Only way to know for sure.:beers2:

Oh and Welcome. This place will be your new home for sure.

Also you have to get your post count to 10 so you can put some pictures up.

Is this just the stripped version of a GS then? What differences are there as far as body and other features that I would have to do for a clone?

Atleast I only paid 1500 bucks for it. That could have been very dissapointing, I havn't got much of a clue about 67's. I bought it so I could build it for my dad, he had a 67 gs. He'd know the difference when I gave it to him for sure! So not a good idea for a gs clone though?

Could you confirm the numbers off of the cowl tag?

    Maybe it is a 340?

Really even with the tag? The 400 that he says is matching cant be though huh. I guess when the car gets picked up I will post some pics to see what you think.

no he didnt, this whole thing doesnt really add up though. he told me honestly it was a gs though but he could just not know the difference. He said that the gs emblems that are on it look like they were there from the factory. Maybe someone attempted to make a gs clone and thats how he got it. he had a good 100 pos rating on ebay, If he sold me a mislabeled car I guess its my fault just as much as his. I just gotta find a way to get my dad to think this is a 67 gs 400 just like the one he had!! haha wish i had the build sheet!

There are some guys on here more familiar with this model than I. I suspect a GS 340 came with Special number. It is not a GS 400 I would say but I do not see that he specifies that it is a GS 400 in his ad. For just a few years Buick made a 340 cid engine.

I would really be concerned about rust issues with this vehicle. I suggest you have it inspected in person before you complete this transaction.

Yeah allready paid up. Worst case I can put it back on ebay "For sale 67 buick....gs\skylark\special, told wasn't rust bucket but is...reserve is set @ $5...happy bidding" I think this will turn out to be depressing.

a 400ci engine will have 5 bolt valve covers and a 340ci or 300ci will have 4 bolt valve covers.

the 400 was in production from 1967-69 and the 340 was from 1966-67.

Is this just the stripped version of a GS then?

the small block GS shared VINs with the Special v8 some years while the California GS shared VINs with the Special v6 even though it was equipped with a v8. the VIN by itself is not enough to say one way or the other.

That vin tag with 33417# from the auction doesn't make sense. It should be 43417. The 1'st 4 in the sequence denotes it's a Buick. Any GS340 I've seen here or on the net is a hrdtp. & has 43417 as the model# but I'm no expert by any means and the Cali. models were a thin pillar coupes wich it is not.
If it is a GS340 why are so many emblems missing?
For sure there is 66 fenders/vents and a 66 hood on the car.
The car actually is not to bad for the price paid and I've boughten many. I'd snap it up throw a BBB in it and get busy even if it is only a Special. But that's just my opinion.

Do you think it will be worth putting together as a GS clone even if it is just a special? I don't know how many modifications I would have to do to make it a respectable "replica" GS. I guess the biggest thing to see is how much plastic is in the body, and what sort of shape the frame is in. Also what are the major differences between the 66 and 67 GS's and specials? A lot of the pictures I see of 67 GS's look very similar to the skylarks and specials of the same year. Are there only Performace options and badges?

Looks like a special to me. If it is not rusted out a good deal too.
