So I want to rebuild the motor. should I buy a complete kit or just have the Machine shop get what i need from like speed pro federal mogul and other company's or do I want to go from a kit like Ebay or egge or some other source. Any advice is welcome.

I would/ am gonna pick and choose the parts for the 401 that I am building for my ford truck..... you come up with a better engine that way.... the kits dont always have ALL the best parts for a particular engine.... kind of like doing a detailed painting with a 6 in. wide paint brush.....

I ended up buying parts from at least 5 different vendors when I did my engine. I shopped quality, brand name and price so where ever that process took me is where I went but......I did all the assembly. As doc said it would be very difficult to have a kit that served every build without having extra parts not needed and not having ones that are.

If the shop is doing some or all the assembly the best thing to do is talk about it with your builder because they may not guarentee their work if they don't supply the parts. You can probably save a few bucks by shopping around but if you supplying the parts aggravates the builder, then it might not be worth it. At a minimum I'd want to know what brand and type of parts they are using for everything. For example if they install new valve guides I'd want to know what kind of guide they planned to us.

If you are assembling yourself then you are free to shop around. If there was one source I used the most I'd have to say it was falconglobal on ebay. I was very satisfied with them. Thats just one opinion, there are folks here that have a lot more experience than I.
