STAGE III Lost Experimental 455-4 Bolt Main Block.

Okay, just got back from the barn with the used, non a/c water pump pulley I just bought sight unseen, for my 1960 401 that was originally an a/c car.

Since I was playing hell finding an a/c type water pump with the long neck I opted to use the non a/c water pump I WAS able to find (1962-66 water pumps are plentiful but are different than the 1960-61 before anyone asks).

So this pulley I got so I could at least drive my car again (been dead since LAST summer) doesn't even fit on the water pump shaft. Looks like even if it did nothing would be close to lining up.

Could someone PLEASE post a picture of a 1960-61 401 water pump pulley mounted on the car or not, so I at least have an idea what I need to be looking for?

Or better yet SELL me one that will work. Cannot tell you how disgusted I am with this whole thing, once I DO find a pulley that fits and lines up then I probably will need to replace all the power steering and generator belts to as I am sure that will be different lengths also, but that would actually be easy!

Cannot wait till that guy comes out with new timing covers that fit all these years AND accepts the newer pumps because currently........ This sucks!!!

Killer convertible and I haven't been able to drive it in "forever!"

    Thank you for ANY help!

John, would it solve the problem if you found the correct water pump??? Can't your pump be rebuilt??? You can bolt-on any "NailHead" timing cover, like '62-'66, but I'm sure your pulleys still won't line up. If I remember correctly you have really deep pulleys. I have the name of a rebuilder that I've been using for more than 15 years if your interested.

    John,

Have you tried calling CARS? Maybe Western Auto, I think that is who I got mine from when I did my 60 Electra

    Tom,

Yes, I could have had mine rebuilt but funds were tight as usual with 3 children, so I located this non a/c type pump of the correct year on ebay for 19.95.

T/A had a rebuilt one for an 1960-61 a/c car but it was $120 (plus shipping and a core) and I didn't have the extra hundred plus to spend at the time.

Between pulley, new belts, silicone and frustration I'd probably had come out cheaper.

    Mark,

Yep, I can buy 62-66 waterpumps all day long there but try for a 60-61.

    Guys,

At this point everything is mounted and siliconed in place I JUST need a pulley for a non a/c car,(1959-62 would probably best, but I guess at least the pulleys interchange):Dou:

    Tom,

Thanks I may as well get the contact info on the rebuilder, couple seals and bearings has to be allot less than the other options I had at the time.

Just really didn't think it would be this big of a deal to locate a non air nailhead pulley, a/c was what was rare back then:Do No:

His name is Tony. On average it will cost approx. $85.00 tell him I sent ya. He does a good job. Knock on wood I have never had a come back in 10 years & this includes the one in my Riv. that I've raced. I went down the 1/4 97 times in '04 alone. So I think that says a lot.

Thanks Tom, if no one comes up with a pulley I may raid the piggy bank and just get mine done and put the damn thing back correct (like I SHOULD have done in the first place).

Sounds like you have gotten good service out of yours so I'll be sending mine either way:TU:

I was also just curious if it could be done (converting from a/c to non a/c) with out a huge hassle but obviously I am getting that answered in a big way.:Dou:

Out of curiosity does anyone even make aftermarket pulleys for nailheads?

John, if your convert has A/C it's pretty rare in 1960 in anything never the less a convert. Pulley's have been made in the past by some, but they are kinda costly.

I have never seen any numbers on production, as the whole car seems pretty rare as equipped.

Also has the bucket seat option (power on drivers side),storage console, speed alert,Autotronic eye,WonderBar, and is a factory black convertible.

Really need to crunch those numbers somehow some day.

Just really wanna get her back on the road:pray:

Just heard back from the guy I got the non a/c pulley from and he swears it came off a 1960 Buick wagon. Even though I will not be paying to restore the a/c system for a LONG time I may just get the original rebuilt (a/c type) and at least keep it close.Car is all numbers matching so guess I should stay true to that.
