Richards car does have the trim on the rear. Here's a photo from the famous Stage 1 vs Hemi Race. According to the GS order form all '70 big blocks got the rear trim except the GSX.
My dad has removed the trim from the rear of more than one '70 Stage 1 because he prefers the appearance of no trim, even though both cars came with it. Both cars have been to the GS Nats multiple times so maybe you saw these cars with the missing trim. Never trust a restored car as a benchmark for anything related to originality
Mines a 70 GS Stage 1 and did not have the trim installed, but during tear down and grinding off the paint, all the trim holes appeared on the trunk and quarter extensions. Previous owner must have filled them with bondo and repainted. Then again, my bumpers were painted white and all the front end components are 71 part number based, so there's no telling what the previous owner did or hit. I am putting the trim back on the car as my understanding is that all Stage 1's had the trim.
I think it’s more complicated than that. In 71 it appears you got all or nothing with option W2. On 70 and 71 order forms that is what it shows both years. There looks like there are many 70’s running around with just the rear trim. This is true with 70 magazine photos. Some have just the rear or no rear but very few 70’s appear to have the upper side trim although order form says they should.
It's even more complicated then that. I know of two 1971 GSX's that came with upper peak moldings and no rear trim, and one of them is a small block. Duane
Both of the cars I attached above previously had the upper peak moldings on the sides of the car as well. It was all deleted as a personal preference.
Has anybody used the reproduction chrome extensions truck extension trim is it any good or should I go with good set of original extension chrome ends ?
Take me and Wild Bill with you. You can just leave us there Someone removed the rear trim from the Aquamist way back when. My 71's build sheet says it came with upper peak moldings.
