I was looking at a Skylark in NM that I was gonna make a deal on but, the owner was hesitant about giving clear information on it. So, I saw this on Ebay and put my winning bid in. I sopke to the owner who had the car since '76 and he said the only rust it had was top of the wheel well on the right quarter panel and it was repainted in September. Everything else is original, including the vinyl top and exhaust. He's selling it because he's 72 and getting too old to enjoy them. Well, here it is. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1871309247&rd=1

    Thanks,

So, what do you guys think? What precautions should I take when looking the car over when picking it up? The gentleman was really honest when describing the car. So, the only thing I think will need to be fixed is the radiator support underneath the battery. He said there's a couple small holes.

    Thanks,
    Rob

Looks like a deal to me. I had my eye on that auction too! I'm hoping to be on the market early next year for one. Hope there's some deals like that when I'm ready. :beer

    Thanks guys:TU: ,

I spoke to the gentleman on the phone before I put a bid on. I guess I'm a little leary on purchasing a vehicle sight unseen. He has a large car collection and with being 72 years old he figures he getting to old to enjoy them anymore. I feel I got one heck of a deal :beer . I only live a couple hours from the owner so, hopefully on monday I'll be able to pick it up. I'll post some pics when I get it home.

For that price you picked up a really clean car. You'll definately have to keep us posted. So, are you gonna keep the dog dish wheels or find some rallyes for it? I think it would be pretty cool if you removed the wheels from the rims and had them painted the body color, then reassembled everything with the trim rings and dishes. I have always loved those dog dish wheel combos, especially when the wheels are body color.

Way to go Rob. Just FYI, if there is rust over the wheelwells (on the lip), then there is most probably rust in the rear window channel. And there is a pretty good chance there is rust on the lower quarterpanel behind the rear wheels and just ahead of the bumper.

Take a magnet and search for bondo. If any rust or bondo is found see if you can negotiate a better price. All in all, a nice ride for the coin.

    Chris,
That sounds like a good idea with the wheels. I never thought about that. The car was used as an undercover police vehicle for drug busts for 4 years beginning in '72. I guess that's where the wheels came from. With being a police vehicle, i hope it has the posi rear and better gearing than stock. But, I can't complain:grin:

    Thanks Yardley,
I spoke to the guy last night and he told me before he got it painted that there was alittle bit of rust starting on the top lip of the rt. quarter panel (blistering the paint not all the way through). He said he got it fixed when they did the paint. I asked him if there was any rust under the top and he said no (its still the original top and in very good condition). It said in the description where his daughter put in that he owned it since '78 but, he told me he got in '76. Its been garaged since he got it in '76 and he said it's in the garage so much that he only washed it twice a year. What scared me alittle was the mentioning of snow tires :Dou: LOL. He said he would take it for a spin during the winter season but, not in inclemant weather. It seems as though its a very solid car for a '72 and being its a GS makes it even better

    Thanks,
    Rob

    You definately scored a bargain:TU:
While you're there picking it up, how about finding out what else he's selling off and letting us all know:Brow:
Pictures would also be nice, of course:grin:

I just got off the phone with him and he has 2 1966 mustangs, a convertible and sport coupe and a 1951 2-door Hudson Hornet that has 33,000 original miles! Its also the golden anniversary edition that the dealers used as a demonstration vehicle. He told me they only made 300 or so of them. That would be one sweet car!

    Rob,

If you looking for some wheels, I have 4 Buick 14 X6 ralley wheels with trim rings that are in good condition for $50 with some junk tires on them. I don't have the center caps.

If you look at the pictures on ebay, check out the one of the interior. Look in the rearview. Look familiar?

staining and probably rust on the rear deck. skylarks are famous for it. not a problem if caught early.
This car looks to be well kept. window may just need to be sealed.
    Not looking to upset you.
    You got an incredable deal.

    Hi Bill,
Thanks, I just saw that after zooming in. That definetly scares me. I don't feel like messing with rust. I'm going down on tuesday to look and pick-up the car. If there is rust in there would It be pretty soft when applying pressure? Or, is the only way to find out how bad is by removing the top?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Get in the trunk!
    Bring a flashlight.
Even if there is a hole it's an easy repair if your gonna use it as a driver and not a show car.

ok, thanks Bill:TU: If there is a hole, how much do you think it would cost to repair?
