Rarely do I need them, but the other day while driving my 72 GS, I clicked on the hi beams at night. They worked like normal for about 20 seconds, then my headlights began to flicker on and off intermittently as well as all of my dash lights. The car began to run funny too. Once I went back to low beams, everything was back to normal. What could cause this and how can I fix it?
Yes, grounds as John said., but also, your headlight switch has a thermal circuit breaker in it, that will open if high current flow heats it up. So any kind of short to ground, or bulb issue could result in flashing headlights, and other electrical system problems. The best thing that ever was reproduced for these cars is the forward light harness, since so many of them are in pretty tough shape.. check yours. JW
My Riv will do this after 10 mins of high beams being on. I was thinking maybe the dimmer switch was going bad
Thanks guys. I'll start there. Dimmer switch is probably original. May replace that just because since they are reasonably cheap.
Had the same thing happen in my 63 Wildcat. The newer standard headlights I fitted were still higher amp than the original and the extra draw kept tripping the circuit breaker in the light switch. I ended up fitting a relay.
In the main feed to the headlights, actually put in two, one for each set. I thought it was the dimmer at first as I had just replaced it, but once I checked the volts/amps for the new/old headlights I tested them without the engine running and could hear the light switch clicking. With the relays in I can now run any power headlight I like - upgraded to late model Hella units, high/low outside set, pencil beam inside set, with 110% Hella bulbs. I can see half way to the moon now
