Water temp difference at back of head?

Discussion in ''Da Nailhead' started by BamaWildcat, Sep 26, 2004.

  1. I would like to add an aftermarket gauge to my nailhead, but retain the stock "hot" and "cold" idiot lights. If I just pull out the plug in the driver's side head where the temp sender would be if it was a passenger side head, will I get a reliable temperature reading, or will it be like 30 degrees off?

I'm wanting to do the same thing, and would think that the temp reading will be about the same. The thing holding me back is those plugs are generally hard to get out without a torch-get them 'cherry red' first. FWIW-I think the cold light is sposed to go out at about 100-good luck!

  3. Tried to pull the plug after more than a month of PB Blaster.

    No go.

I'll have to try the heat, but I have a bunch of wires I don't want to fry close to it.

Guys, 1st. off I have done that to my '64 Riv. years ago. Used a mechanical mini gauge. No difference was noted between the rear of the left cylinder head & the neck of the radiator.
As for the plugs. I use this trick for the oil gallery plugs which are almost impossible to remove sometimes without drilling. I 1st. heat the offending plug with a propane torch, not red hot, but hot enough to melt wax (a candle or some type of wax) & let the wax melt over the plug. If you get it hot enough the wax will wick its way down around the threads. After it has cooled, most times the plugs will come out very eaisly.
