who makes a solid pump for a street car ? I'm sure all the normal parts stores can get them, but whats the best ? thanks, Paul
Gates or Airtex. I hope you know for sure whether you have the long or short pump on your engine. If you don't, measure. Then there is the TA Performance HD pump, but you still need to know long or short.
Larry, if my car is using an electric fan for cooling, will I still need to know if its a long or short ? Paul
Yeah, if you want your pulleys to line up. You just have to look at the pump to tell which one you have. look at the length of the shaft extension above the fan clutch mounting surface of the pump. The short pump has about 1/2" extension, the long pump has a full 1". See the measurement diagram from the TA catalog I posted
Do you have the pulleys? Crank and water pump? If so, post the part numbers on them. If you guess, you have a 50% chance of being wrong, and if you consider Murphy's law, odds are you guess wrong. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/455pulleybrkts.htm
Hey Paul... Dont get caught up in overthinking this. Rush it and yer stuck. Take the time to fit it proppa and itll all be behind you in an hour. So Ill be the the butcher here... get a pump and do a mock up. Put it all together with two bolts in each part. Make sure all the mating surfaces are clean. If the pump doesnt match? Return it for a different one. Done. Dont forget to run a bottom tap and blow out all the holes, and dont forget the never seize, and some permatex on the bolts that penetrate into the water jackets. ws
my motor is sitting in the bay. with the crank pulley already there , I did measure it though and will post pictures. water pump pulley 1375146 looks to be shorter than the other one. I have both but the longer one has no numbers. Another crank pulley number , seems lighter in weight. 1368359 , not sure if the 1 should be there, it was very light on the stampimg. I agree with you Bill , do a mock up .
The crank pulley you have looks like a cast iron unit. Maybe from a 400/430? EXSPURTS?? My pump pulley is from a 455 with AC. I think all the 455 crank jobs are stamped steel. I only run a single alternator pulley on '64 455. The inboard crank pulley is for the PS. The width between the two drivers on the crank may play into your alignment. This is my 72 XGS. with a '74(?) block. Not sure about the accys'. The PS bracket is from a 70 or 71... no smog pump mount. Bill
It does appear to be a cast unit. No power steering to worry about at this time. I could try the pulley that's on there but I have the steel one for additional figuring out.
Don’t really overheat much. So they must work well.. ........................... OK. your happy ... what ever
