The water pumps may fit from year to year. But aren't the pumps different in shaft length between 68-69 to 70-72? I'm not sure on the 64-67 at all. Plus according to the auction, Buick made a 440. I bet those bring some big bucks. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1868312857 Hasting USA NOS Rebuilt Water Pump # 557. not only does it show Buick made a 440 but it also says that the 400 & 430 were built through 72 and the 455 as 67-70 only. ou: Didn't the 455 replace both the 400 & 430 in 70?
Very few people know this, but there was a joint R&D project between Chrysler and Buick. Buick tried using the hemispherical heads from the Chrysler 426, which brought the displacement from the 455 down to 440. Most of these engines have disappeared. They had a bad tendancy to develop head gasket leaks, because of the difference in bolt pattern designs. But Buick did make a hemi 455! The project was abandoned because there wasn't really any significant performance gain. These were made in 1970 and 1971. They were badged as 455s, Buick just assumed that the general public wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two motors. They were only used in the big cars (Riv, Electras), and can be found by a slightly larger than normal valvecover (chances are that you won't see many in most junkyards any more). -Bob Cunningham bobc@gnttype.org
Come on guys.... You do realize that our good Mr Cunningham is yanking on your leg here... Water pumps for big blocks are simple... 67-70 used a short pump.. (that is what is in that ebay pic) 71-76 Used a longer pump. The water pump pulley must match the pump.. short pumps have short pulleys ect... JW PS.. nice story Bob, do you write fiction for a living ? :gt:
:error::laugh::laugh::laugh:So exactly how would "swapping" a pair of Mopar Hemi heads deplete engine displacement by 15 cubic inches??:laugh::laugh::error:
Aww, shucks, I've been found out. Can't let things just be "all business" around here, ya know! -Bob C.
Hey, I learned a long time ago not to disbelieve anything, after all, who the hell would have known there was a 69 Motion GS??? Before this board existed, I'd have told anyone who suggested such a thing that they must have smoked too much crack. Hugger Orange GS's, Stage 1 Sun Coupes, 68 Stage 1's, why not a Buick 440? :moonu:
