Water Cooled Turbos

    Just wondering if anyone has yet to upgrade to a water/oil cooled turbos over their oil cooled turbos?

    So far I havent found a cheap one with ab external waastegate feature...they're all internally wastegated

    the coolent/oil hybrid features makes the turbos run less hott and virtually no oil coaking, which I would assumed you most likely wont have to do that xminuted idle to mins of boost to shut down the car..

    I also heard since the turbos run cooler, that it in return makes the engine run a tad hotter, but not so sure about that..

    actually looks like the link ive posted is indeed for an external wastegate/

    but pros of water cooled turbos are:
    can run 300 to 600degrees cooler
    longer turbo life
    quicker cool down(only have to idle for like 20 secs comparted to a couple mins prior to shut down
    ball bearing instead on jouranl bearings
    slightly quicker spool time.compared to journal bearing counterpart. This means you can run a bigger turbo and still spool the same give or take as a smaller journal bearing turbo!

    cons are more lines to install and worry about leaking
    can possibly make engine run 10 degres hotter or so as now youre sharing both engine oil and antifreeze..

    My turbos actually seem to get hotter if I just stop and idle for two minutes..

    t04e oil cooled from marks kit , gt35?

    btw, have you haven any porblems with vapor locking due to the inline epmp and extending drives??

    I am a complete "lost puppie" when it comes to talking about turbo sizes..

    it;ll say it on the asting on youre turbos..last i know marks been using the t04es which are good for 350hp per turbo max working psi for them are 20psi

    what would you like to know

    I'll make a seperate turbo 101 post later on if you'd like?

    Little turbos spool faster than big turbos.. Bigger isn't faster in most situations.. There is the vast expanse of my knowledge..

    The front of my compressor says .50 AR..

    Yep to4e turbos with.50 AR..

    Still waiting on the turbo 101 post. What I have will spool up to 4psi with a two stage rev limiter set at 2700.. Can you say "cook the tires"???

    just for a quick post to quckly cover some things

    all turbos are oil cooled...some are watercooled reducing alot of underhood temps...but requires mor lines to run and may make engine coolent run 5 to 10 degress hotter, also less likly to coke when not properly cooled before shutoff..

    turbos come with various exhaust flanges...the two most popular are a t3 and a t4 flange..

    t4s are geared for v6/v8 with a good size signel application.
    turbos refered to a t3/t4 hybrid has a t4 compressor wheel with a t3 turbine for quicker spool but better power then a regular t3 flanged turbo.

    the higher a/r ratio of the compressor(cold side) wheel means the more potential power it can make..but wheel diameter also plays a rule in this..

    the bigger the turbine(hotside) a/r the slower it;ll spool...but also means at higher rpms it want choke off the engine nor have really bad backpressure..

    also its downpipe mounting of a turbo can come in 3bolt(stock gn s have this)

    5bolt (ford bolt pattern)
    4 bolt housing
    v-band housing.

    5bolt flows worse then a 4bolt
    3in v-band will flow better then both
    the better they flow the less backpressure/reversion there is when under hi amounts of boost...
    I'm sure i'm forgetting alot here but I can add or revise later into a better formed post..

    also theres formulas on how to size a turbo for youre specific engine so the turbos work in its efficiency map instead of being on the verge of the sugging and what not..

    oh yea, turbos also come in single scroll and twin scroll flange housing..

    twinscroll turbos can be found on many diesels and 4clyinder cars..

    they make the whole system more efficient, but also makes for a more complicated install/system in a whole..

    it pretty much does what a tri header or an x-pipe does for the exhaust..it scavenges/smoothes the pulses ..

    yea your cold side/compressor is .50 youre hotside turbine a/r should be .63

    turbos also have different type bearings..

    journal bearing are the oldest tech turbo so theyve been proven time after time..

    wet floating bearing are what ebay turbos usaly uses now adays..

    ball bearing turbos are newer and spool a couple hundered rpms sooner then the journal bearing counterparts..

    you can also get dual ball bearings...or ceramic coated and other bling bling stuff..

    perhaps later ddown the line I'll type of a well throught and organized post instead of just rambling crap down haha
