I thought I might get more "press" here than in the classifieds. I am looking to buy a used GForce crossmember for the 78-83 Gbody. Thanks for any leads.
Iceman vs G-Force I would suggest an Iceman crossmember. I did some research and it seems that these units fit better than the G-Force units and cost less. My Iceman crossmember is expected to arrive on Thursday. Go to www.MalibuRacing.com, and on the home page there is a tab titled 'What's New'. Click on 'Goodies' under the What's New tab to see Rick's (Iceman's) stuff.
I got one from him. It was about $195, shipped. Very nice piece. Mine included the extension because my Regal is a 1982 model. I think that's about $30 extra.
My Muncie/TH350 crossmember was $139 plus shipping. My car is an '84 and no frame extension is needed.
eBay... I found only this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/78-8...ryZ46104QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem It looks like the Jeg's unit, which is a decent piece but based on what I've read the Iceman crossmembers are the most well-made and fit the best. My recommendation of the Iceman unit is based on the numerous posts I've read on the G-body sites regarding custom crossmembers. Once mine arrives and is installed I'll post my actual results.
Great info guys. Sometime's I feel like I live under a rock. Didn't realize others like Jegs and Iceman were also doing them. "Iceman" got back to me quickly. Sounds like a nice deal. Phil, what do you think about the extension? Seems like a crutch to me, or a potential down-side (which the Gforce uses as well).
I just got my Iceman crossmember back from my local powdercoater. This is a nice piece...too bad it gets installed under the car. I'll post an update once I've got it installed.
Installed yet? I wonder if you have any pics of the extension and how it bolts up? I pulled the trans tonight and am ready to toss my old cross-member in the trash heap...but I need to order the new one first I guess!
Crossmember is in... I installed my Iceman crossmember last night. It went very smoothly, and no floor pan massaging was necessary. I did have to remove the catalytic converter heat shield from the floor pan for clearance, but otherwise this crossmember was a perfect fit. Because my car is an '84 I did not use a frame extension.
does it touch the floorpans at all, i bought one for my 80 regal and it seems to touch, it also doesnt seem long enough. if you dont mind can you tell me how wide it is inside to inside you frame rails.
ive had it in both ways and both times it touched, i know the cutout on the driverside is taller. does my model require an extension?
I think you need the extension (all pre-'84's ????). Might want to check with the company you got it from to be sure.
For an '80 Regal...TH-400 or TH-200 4R? Yes, you need the extension. Also, keep in mind while you won't need the extension for a TH-350, the crossmember for a TH-350 is a totally different animal, too.
