I'm looking for a set of nice 64-72 "A" Body ( GS, 442, GTO, Chevelle SS) rear lower boxed control arms (the type used with a rear sway bar). Thanks AL.
Personally, I think a set of reproduction boxed lowers are worth the $200 price tag. That includes new rubber bushings, from The Parts Place. No cleaning, blasting, repainting, bushing removal/re-install required. They're ready to go out of the box. I put them on my car this spring.
AL, there are some on ebay here that are NOS (doesn't your car deserve the best?) Here is the item description: This is a pair (2) of NOS factory GM boxed lower control arms (P/N 9791773) for '64-'72 GM A-body cars. These are no longer produced by GM, only reproductions are available. THESE ARE NEW ORIGINALS. The rubber bushings are perfect.
I have the complete rear setup from HRPartsNstuff. Great product, easy installation and they work great. No wheel hop here at all.
Lower Boxed Control Arms Thanks Guys!!! I have one other question, someone told me the aftermarket ones are slightly different from OEM. Something about the length or something, AL
My SSM bars were the same length, but if you used their brackets it would move them forward about 1/8th in.
Lower Boxed Control Arms A long time ago I thought I saw a bracket kit though GM or after market to weld or bolt in the inside support. This is about 20 plus years ago when I worked at Miller Motor Buick and think it came as a kit so you did not need to replace the lower contol arms. AL
Thats the impression I got when I opened up the SSM box... I figured I could use the Factory bars with their "Lift" brackets. But Since I needed the Arms, I used the whole set. F/S if you decide to get away from OEM.:TU:
control arms Al - you can buy the metal inserts and weld them into your control arms for the OEM design. With your skill it should be a piece of cake! - Bill
OPG has them on sale for $25 a pair. Part # RCAI1001. I bought new TWR bushings at Advance Auto for $6 a peice. Tom Gwillim Swartz Creek, MI
arms Al - if you look at the ebay item above you can see how the OPG part fits in and is welded to the standard arm. Maybe someone on this board can post some better shots, but it looks like they are simply welded along the sides. The loop supports the sides for the sway bar bolts. The flat sections across the bottom makes it more rigid. - Bill
The OPG, etc sway bar inserts are welded in---just along the length of the the original control arm. Pretty simple operation. The part of the insert that tucks up inside the control arm to prevent the bolts from crushing the sides of the arms is not welded---the insert bracket is narrower in these parts so it will slide up into the arm. Each insert is one piece (not multi piece)---just a die cut and bent piece of flat steel. What will you need: Insert Mig Welder Couple of large C Clamps or Vice-Grip clamp pliers to hold the insert tight to the control arm as you weld. Patton
