I have found that I am hitting 17 VDC to my power circuit. I have an internal regulated alternator in my 72 SunCoupe. I did have the harness plug in, but soldered the internals of the external regulator to not require the jumper harness. This spike occurs when I throttle it in gear. Not in neutral or park. Would this have to be my alternator? Or a connection elsewhere possibly causing this issue? Thanks in advance for any inputs ! Mike
If you have measured the voltage correctly and you are using the correct pulley, you have an internal alternator issue. I would have the alternator rebuilt before it permanently damages your battery.
The jumper harness to bypass the external regulator was wires connecting terminals together of the factory harness. I took the regulator and jumpered it internally to reflect the jumper device so I would not be using the regulator on the firewall. Should something inside it be cut? Mike
I took the regulator apart and saw the circuit board in there. I then cut it all out, to remove it from use. I put it all back together and still the same thing occurring. I took the alternator down to oreillys and had it tested, it tested good (twice). I am at a loss for now, as the GEN light comes on the dash when in the key on/engine off state as long as the 2 wire connector is connected. If I remove it, or just have one of the 2 wires connected, the gen light is off when key on/engine off. Still trying to figure this out. Mike
Mike, go check out Georges website he has that modification article written out and it worked out good for me. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/page1.htm Fernando
Thanks Fernando. I have some more info to go on. I found a 104A altenator, new, for $57 shipped free. 3 wire type. When I get it, I am going to install and check for voltage output. The info provided on Georges page will be helpful to troubleshoot if I need to. Hope you are doing well, and hope to see you and the Buick peeps soon ! Mike
