Does anyone have a drawing of the vacuum system on a 58 Buick Special? A friend of mine is restoring one and needs it. His car is equipped with vacuum wipers. Any help would be appreciated!!
http://forums.aaca.org/f162/1958-wiper-vacuum-line-diagram-306613.html Here is a better solution. If you have ever driven a car with vacuum operated wipers you know what I mean. http://www.forwhatyouneed.com/windshield wiper conversions.htm Here is a vacuum unit rebuild service: http://www.wiperman.com/
There are two sources of vacuum from the engine. One is taken from the intake manifold just in front of the carburetor, and the other one is from a vane vacuum pump driven piggy-back to the oil pump in the pan. The attached thumbnail will show just where the vacuum exits the engine block. - Dan
Dear Dan: On the line near the oil filter: is it rubber from the metal pipe going into the block up to the distribution block/manifold-vacuum port? From the large line that takes off from the manifold-vacuum port: how does that go to the brakes, the canister, and the washer bottle? Pictures would be awesome. This is for a 1958 Buick Estate Wagon. It has been some time since we chatted, cheers. Michael.
Mike at T/A Performance rebuilds the vacuum part of the oil pump & can also rebuild the pump while he's at it. Tom T.
. really ? It has been my take that the few rebuilders dealing with this rebuild the firewall mounted controller unit yet have never came across anyone that actually rebuilds the bottom oil pump mounted vane driven vacuum pump and if so, these guys would be the first that I know of.
If he isnt going 100% stock he should upgrade to electric wipers I have driven daily recently cars with both. Any gm car from 54? to 64? Will bolt on. All you will need is a wiper switch from a 58 buick with electric wipers.
