upgraded steering box?

Discussion in 'The whoa and the sway.' started by 70buickgs455kid, May 19, 2005.

  1. I have read about putting a quick ratio steering box from a 80's Monte or GN into an 68-72 a-body and was wondering if anyone was using one of these setups. If so i wanted to know if they were using the original power steering pump, or used a later model one.

    Thanks

I put in a box out of an 86 GN.

I like it. I am currently using my original pump setup. It is more firm. I was told that by changing the springs out on the pressure side, I can lighten it up. I may give it a try this summer and see which I like better. But the very easy steering of the original setup is gone. I actually thought it was too light. They didn't have variable assist back then like they do now and I felt it was too light on the highway. That's why I kind of like it now.

How hard was it to install? This looks like something I'd definitely be interested in.

It's not hard at all. You will need a new rag joint and if keeping your old pump/hoses, you'll need the little brass adapter gaskets to seal up the old standard thread hoses to the box's metric threads. You'll also need to get the arm off of your old box.
