My U shifter is sticking in the up position once and awhile.

Though I would ask for some advise before tearing into it.

    Is this a common problem.

I have never messed with these before.

    Thanks

    Well,
If there are no obvious problems with the shift cable, the problem lies in the shifter handle. The most common problem is with the trigger in the shifter handle. The trigger is plastic, and will sometimes crack on the side, binding up the shifter. To take the shifter handle apart, carefully pry up the "U" shaped clip in the middle of the handle. There are 2 springs underneath, don't lose these. There are 4 small screws holding the handle onto the shifter(2 on each side) Remove these and the handle pulls straight off. The trigger pulls up on a slide(on each side of the shifter), to unlock the shifter handle, so that you can select a gear. What happened to my shifter(At Salem) was the trigger cracked on one side, and the slide did not lift up on one side. I couldn't get the shifter out of park. I had to disassemble the shifter, and use wire ties to secure the trigger in the up position. Fortunately, Racebuicks(Mike Garrison) reproduces both the trigger, and "U" clip in polished aluminum(very nice pieces). The console can be removed by prying up on the emblem(front middle of console), and removing it. There are 2 screws underneath, holding it to the floor. There are also 2 screws inside the compartment. Then the console lifts off exposing the shifter mechanism. Check the cable for kinks, or other problems, then take the shifter apart. Hope that helps.

I had the same problem and just called Mike Garrison for a new 'U' assembly - all pretty chrome.
