Does anybody know what the story is about that photo of the turbocharged nailhead?
Was it some kind of factory prototype or something?
Also, a while back a guy e-mailed me some photos of what he claimed was an original 4-bolt main nail head block.
I have since lost them but I was wondering if Buick ever made such a thing. :Do No:

The turbocharged 425 engine was a factory experimental engine that Buick was thinking of producing. I don't know if it was a specail block, I don't believe it was. The nailhead blocks are very strong. They rated the engine at a measly 360 horsepower, however it made something like 670 lb/feet of torque. Can you imagine trying to get his kind of power to the ground in 1965? Jim Burek

    Robert,

Check out http://www.buickperformance.com/Experim.htm - look at the bottom of the picture.

I had heard (wish I could find the link to the article), that the engine made 800 ft.lbs. When they showed the top brass the prototype, the driveshaft twisted in half. They weren't too thrilled about THAT idea!:Do No:

    4 Bolt main block

Did anyone happen to notice on the bottom picture showing a 4-bolt main block that the skirt of the block was short (to the main cap seam) and that the bell housing bolt pattern was differrent from all nailheads I have seen? Also, has anyone ever seen these in person or do they still exist somewhere? Would be fun to know.

    4 bolt block

That looks just like the block in the photos that were sent to me a while back. I wish that I could find them along with the name of the guy who sent them to me! :Dou:
I would have to think that they made more than just two of them, especially since that guy claimed to have one.:Do No:
Had I known at the time what I was looking at, I would have made an effort to buy it from him. :ball:
The bellhousing bolt pattern looks like the later style BOP. (Buick, Olds, Pontiac)
