Timing is locked out at 35*. It is steady. The car needs a nice cool high pressure day, and I need to shift it higher. If I get it to go through the traps at close to 6000 RPM, it will be all it can be. Anarchist!

Larry, here's some info you can take to the ET bank. My '76 was running 11.90@113.3 at Cecil that day. On a VG air day at Cecil last November I ran 11.65@115.5 so you can figure at least that much improvement on a similar day, maybe a bit more since you are making more HP than me.

Also, I believe our cars have about the same exhaust system. 2.5" mandrel bent to the bumper with Dynomax large case "Hemi" mufflers. I have a 2.5" "H" pipe. I'm not sure if you have one of those. The same day I ran the 11.65 I opened my exhaust and added header extensions and the car ran an 11.49@117.5. I'm sure yours would pick up that much and probably more because you are corking up more HP. The extensions are mandatory on mine. When I opened up the exhaust a few years ago(when the engine was running low 12's) without them I picked up nothing and the car felt weak. As soon as I bolted them on it picked up .1/1mph. Definitely get a set if you ever want to open it up.

Other people have said it already but I'd like to add you need to bump up that shift point. With my 234/242 hydraulic cam I shift at 5700 for best ET's. On the chassis dyno my HP peaks just about at 5500 rpm. I also have the factory floor shifter so I set the governor to shift at 5700 automatically 1-2 and I manual it out 2-3. It is tricky to get it to shift automatically at the the same rpm 1-2/2-3. I wouldn't really trust my floor shifter for the 1-2 but for the 2-3 I have had no problems.

Hopefully you can make it over to ATCO in November for the Buick vs. Ford day. Last year they had some of the best air they've had in a while and my car was only a little bit slower than Cecil's best(low 11.70's).

    Thanks Alan:TU:,
Ron actually pointed that out to me after we got back to the hotel on Saturday. I went right next door to the truck stop, bought a pair of 1157 bulbs, and changed it out right then and there.

I'm thinking your brake light is still out:laugh:

    Thanks Mike,
I know there is lots more in it when I get everything straight, shift it higher, and get a nice cool high pressure day. As far as my exhaust goes, coming off the 3 1/2" MT header flanges, I have the Dr. Gas X pipe, 3" in front, 2 1/2" rear to the 17749 Walker Long case mufflers, 2 1/2" tail pipes to the big Wheelz N25 tips. Hopefully, I can make it to Atco or Island in November on a nice cool day. I will rework my extra governor to shift at 6000, I have the Eagle rods in this engine, and they should handle it. I will also try leaving the shifter in 2nd, and at the proper time, trigger the GV to go through the traps in 2nd over. That will be like 4.09 gears. 120 MPH, if it traps that high, will be almost 5900 with no slip. Should be perfect. It will be a nice way to end the year.

Larry, I don't think Boychick has the 97 cents for a stoplight bulb.

Maybe we can take up a collection at the next event, oh wait, maybe he can't change a bulb by himself and needs our help.

I know he's in no rush because he never drives that car since he broke it !!! :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:

    Alan,
You let me know when you want to take the head off Big Red, and fix those stripped out header bolts. We'll do the brake light at the same time.

Mike , You say you used extensions on your headers ... I have TA 1 7/8'' pri. tube headers with 3 1/2" collectors , if not 3 1/2", what Dia. tubes & how long should they be ? I have a pair of tapered reducer cones that I could cut back toward the flange for a 3 1/4" or 3" Dia. if needed. I had asked this question before this week w/o anyone answering so I thought I would ask you Mike . Thanks ,ick

Larry, I found this TSB from 2009 today. I can't remember what you are using for fluid but use non syn ATF for drag racing.

Do I read your signature right Larry? Are you running a switch pitch converter in that thing?

    Yes I am:laugh: One of Jim's 12" modified. 3200/1800, but who knows.

Interesting. Must be something new. Never saw that. It isn't in my instructions. I'm not using the GV during drag racing (not yet:laugh:) Does that make a difference? I have always used the GM 12346190. I have had the GV since 7/21/06, and 16,000 miles ago. I've changed the fluid 2 or 3 times.

Man, I can't help but wonder how much faster your car would be with one of these killer modern converters.

Yup, I'm thinking the right 9.5" would get me off the line much better than my best 1.63 60'. We may find out down the road, but for now, I want to try shifting it at 6000, and running through the traps in 2nd over using the GV.

I am thinking it will do more than that. With the right set up and shift extensions, I bet you will pick up MPH out the back too.

My nephew ran a stock 300 S/P conv in his 65 a few years ago car ran 11:48 @ 119MPH then he went to a better conv and it did not change his et. Later he switched cams and heads and the car went faster the best 10:96 123 mph with the better conv.

Doesn't sound like a "better" converter.

Were there any dyno numbers or charts published for the 290HR setup before the engine issues were discovered?
