How its supposed to get installed and how it actually gets installed is sometimes two very different things. As an example, I have an air cleaner with an original decal that looks like Stevie Wonder put it on.
I picked up an NOS trunk strip from Ebay which I way overpaid for. It was part number 3060942. It is a superceded number. The correct original part # would be 9825829. I believe that would be the same as original with the string in it. Check out the below photo. Left to right 1. Reproduction I bought from Cars year ago which was on a big wooden spool at the GS nationals. It fits ok but lip is not really the same as stock. Not real soft. Requires slamming hood. Not sure waht brand it really is. 2. This is an original as installed on the assembly line. Has stirng asa you can see in botton. Fits perfect and is soft. 3. THis piece was off my friends 72 Olds. I beleive it has been replaced. It has a small rubber traingle inside. It is very soft and may be an older version of the superced 3060942. It is samller than the later generation of the same number and has a smaller triangle insert. 4. THis is newest NOS(now discontinued at GM) It has bigger triangle adn is taller. It is soft latex as well but because of size may create resistance when closing trunk. 5. This is OER brand soft latex. The top lip is about 1/8" bigger than later NOS even though it looks bigger in picture.
In this photo all the pieces are shown installed in the track. 1. IS the off the spool repro. It fits OK but not the best. I always had to slam the trunk with this one. 2. Is Original pice. It fits the best Would not prevent trunk from closing easy. 3. This is old NOS 3060942. Fits lowest and is softest. I think there is some where here causing it to be lowest. I have no idea why it is lower than an original? 4. Next is NOS that I just got. It was made in 2005 as was printed on the sealed foil package it came out of. It is soft latex but size may prevent trunk from closing nice. The lip does push down easily however so this may provide the best seal. 5. This is new NOS with the rubber triangle insert cut out. It pushes down more easily when pushing on it but it makes lip the rest against the rubber rub against the paint and compress so it may cause paint where over time if you take it out.....I did not try OER brand as I did not want to cut it. It would be much like NOS but lip is not as defined so it may not fit in chanel as well. Verdict Find an old NOS with the string if you can #9825829. If you don't then your choice. I would like to compare a Metro. Does anyone out there have a Metro they could show a cross section of?
Anyone know if both lower rubber lips fit below the channel metal ridge? Looks like one lip wants to be below and one wants to be above is this correct?
Dave---I swear you could cut those weatherstrip sections into approx 1.4" slices and sell them as mini Gumby's. You may have to paint some eyes on them, etc but looks like it'll work to me!!!!!:TU: Foam Gumby's. Great comparison pics....thanks.
Patton, I think Pokey is out of the question however.:TU: >>>I looked in the Fisher body Manual and it tells how to install the trunk weatherstrip. It states that the strip was to be started in the rear MIDDLE. Then it later states that the butt joint should be joined in the rear MIDDLE. So the guys on the assembly line that did not install them inthe middle I guess did not give a crap. There are 5 70-72 Skylarks and also other A bodies in a junkyard I go to I think next time I get there I will check them all to see how many were in the middle.
I guess I installed my weatherstripping incorrectly if the curved edge is supposed to be around the perimeter instead of inside the channel. I have no leaks but I guess when it warms up I will take it out and install it the right way!:TU: I always though the edges were supposed to meet in the middle since there was no real channel there and putting it anywhere else could lead to leaks
Just re did mine for the third and hopefully final time. Keeping the right side up this time I noticed it wanted to walk out of the channel on the two top corners by the deck. Did the best I could to get it to sit correctly then closed the trunk on her to let the gasket seat and the adhesive dry. Seems like it actually sat better when installed incorrectly but I know for a fact that I did not get a good seal.
Some of the reaproductions do not have a well defined lip so it does not sit well in the channel. The GM stuff I got has a nice defined lip and hold in nice even without adhesive. I guess the seam was offset for a reason. Originals had a two paint stripe mark on them to line up at the top.
Looks like the current install worked. Washed the car, soaked the channel and no water!!!!!!!!! Thanks for everyones input!:beer
Washed the car and only drips got in the trunk.. First rain since the install and it seems just as much water is getting in as it did with no weatherstripping and this is even after I reinstalled the weather stripping properly. I can't see where else water would come from but the puddles are around the trunk channel which was clean and rust free when I removed the old gasket.:ball:
