Trim Removal

Is there any sort of instruction manual that tells how to remove all of the trim from a '68 Riviera? Seems like every trim piece has different clips, nuts and bolts; most of it is easy to remove, but only if you know the secret: where to slide which tool, how many clips there are, what they look like... The Chassis Manual doesn't show/tell this stuff (but if you want to rebuild your windshield wiper motor, you're golden!) Any YouTube DIYs that you know of? PDFs that I can download? Websites that show/tell?

Probably exactly what I need. But $46 dollars? There has to be an online .pdf version for $10 or so... I'll do some Googling.

    Thanks!

Gary, what trim pieces are you trying to remove?

All of it, really. I'm getting ready for a re-spray and it makes sense to remove everything possible before doing so. Primarily, I'm confused about the lower rocker moldings; I think some are screwed down (like just behind the front bumper) and the longer strips have those S-shaped clips with a spring wire (which I never seem to release right) and I don't want to bend the stuff since it's in such good condition. The Riviera logo on the trunk...? Feels like there are speed nuts behind it, but I can't see how to get to them. There are also a couple of tiny S-shaped clips that hold down the trim on the rear edges of the vinyl - these have speed nuts under the sheet metal as well, but I'm missing one of them and can't find a supply of them. Hood trim and letters looks pretty straight-forward.

Also, those round, red rear marker lights - I know there's a metal fork holding them in, but where to reach from - inside the trunk?

I can't help with the rocker trims as my car came to me without any and all the holes filled. As for the trunk logo you have to reach up in between the trunk skin and frame in one of the holes with a wrench to get to the nuts. Rear circle marker lights you access from in behind the rear quarters from under the car. Lay on the ground (unless you have a hoist) and look up you'll see the retainer clip/nut. I found speed nuts at my local Napa, if not there try online they're pretty easy to get if you know the size. Door window trims I think there's screws on either end?

Very helpful, thanks! I'm probably gonna buy a speed-nut kit with lots of different sizes. Still, that damn vinyl top edge trim clip; I have one on one side, but the other is missing. I'll just have to track down a used one.

Take a pic of the one clip you have and post it here, I'll check my spare parts I may have one. The parts lot I bought came from a 69 Riv GS car which I think most of them had the vinyl top?

Pics with clip in and out of stainless trim. You can see how it slides into place from that opening:

Thanks Gary I'll take a look this weekend and see if I come across any.

Thank you. And in the meantime, I splurged and bought that Fisher Body Manual that Mike mentioned (above). I'm sure it will come in handy for many things, and it will complement my Chassis Service Manual.

I purchased one of those body manuals for my '64 Skylark. There's a lot of info that isn't in the chassis manual. There is also an assembly manual available which I also bought. It's not an original book, but has useful info also.

I tried to get to the round rear marker lights from below, from inside the trunk and from around the rear. Can't even see the clip that holds them in. There's inner metal structure blocking access to them from all directions. Are you saying that I have to remove the rear bumper to get to them?

UPDATE: No, the manual only shows that there's a flat clip holding the lights from the inside, but says nothing about how to gain access to them.

Also, received my Body Service Manual in the mail today, so I'll probably be able to look this up.

Were you able to search your trim clips for that little football-shaped clip in the pic I posted?

I will try and get to my storage unit where my car is to get some pics of how to gain access to those lights. As for those little clips I looked in all my parts bins and couldn't find any sorry.
