I am a Marine currently stationed in California. Next summer I will be moving to Georgia. I am currently trying to figure out what I am going to do with my '62 Electra. When I moved here I didn't have a truck so the decision was easy. Now I have a 2005 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, so I have the option of towing. What is complicating the decision is that with the leave and travel days it will be nearly two months between when I leave California and arrive in Georgia. That delay will complicate shipping, but during that time we will be visiting family in Minnesota and Wisconsin which will mean a lot more towing miles. Suggestions?

I could drive that car for you from California to Georgia, for free :TU: !
All you need is an address where I can deliver it and leave the keys.

Option 1: I would draw a line on a map from Ca to Ga. Where that line gets closest to either Wis or Mn mark the nearest decent sized city, go online for storage lots and price out temp storage, inside or outside. Tow it there, park it, continue on for your visit. This way, you give up the shortest route to visit but you remain in control of your car its safety and the time to adjust to anything that comes up. If you use a tow dolly which is cheaper and lighter than a trailer, you will have to disconnect the driveshaft to protect the tranny. you can find tow dollies reasonably priced on Craigslist.
Option 2: post an ad in your base newspaper or NEX bulletin board for someone to drive it their next duty station in Ga. Just be careful about who is reliable and trustworthy.

    Brian,
First things first - Thank you for your service to our country! :beers2:

You didn't mention if you have a trailer or would need to rent one. If you have to rent one, I'd try to work out shipping option. The cost is probably going to be around $1000 give or take a hundred for auto transport. Sounds like a lot but not in the grand scheme of things. Towing a car through the Rockies and cross country for what might be 3000 miles I don't believe will save you any money after weighing all the pros and cons especially if otherwise you would be driving a car that gets double or triple the gas mileage of a tow vehicle.

Having said that, if you already own a trailer and would be moving or taking that with you no matter what, then by all means put the car on it. One way car hauler trailer rentals are killer as far as cost.

A "competant" Auto Transport company will work with you to make any special arrangments you need to get the car picked up and delivered where you want, when you want. Believe me you are not the only one with this dilemma. Probably common sense but not all auto transport companies are created equal and differences in service and communication can be night and day so be careful if you go that route.

    Jason,

I don't own a trailer. Have had it suggested to me that I buy one, but I don't need one often enough to make it worth the cost of registration, storage, maintenance, etc.

I haven't talked to transport companies yet because I'm not moving until June. I had the car shipped out here to CA from MN a few years ago and it cost around $800. My guess is that shipping it from CA to GA will be similar in cost since it is a similar distance and is maybe a little less off the beaten path from where I had it shipped from in MN.
