Hi all, any experience or advice w this issue? I have a beautiful 70 GS Stg 1 4 speed, purchased late last year, body off , tranny, clutch all redone with in last 10 yrs, under 10k miles. only had it out twice till yesterday. took a ride, made a couple stops, turned car off, keys out, when i came back, i couldnt get in gear, started fine. i jumped under car and moved the linkage w a friend in driver seat moving shifter - after 15 minutes, we got it to reengage. ran for another 15, then same thing happened again!
any insight or help till i haul it to theshop?

Use an alignment key or a drill bit to reset the length of the shifter rods.

    Flynbuick is 100% right on.

If the shifter alignment is not good in the neutral position, then this happens.

You can use a 1/4" bit to do it - easy fix.

While you are under the car make sure all the rubber grommets in place and are not worn.

Also make sure the shift arms on the trans. are tight. I have seen this numerous times. 9/16" nuts hold them on. Don't try & make them TOO tight as the stud will break off.

You can also bolt up at least one or maybe two rods upside down. Verify correct installation.

I had this same problem with my 70 Vette with new bushings and everything adjusted correctly. The stock shifter is garbage which is why they almost always get converted to Hurst shifters. If you get frustrated with it you can always sell it to me:D.

usually they get jammed going from second to third. the shifter wears and second jams.

Like Joe alluded to, if the shifter is original and hasn't been rebuilt, you might want to consider freshening it up too. I rebuild them myself using a rebuild kit from Hurst Shifters Online. They're a little tricky to do yourself but once you get a few under your belt, they go pretty smooth . The first couple were nightmares though! The hardest part is installing the reverse detent spring and washer.

I've had 2 different Richmond 5 speeds do this!
What was happening was.... it wasn't pulling all the way out of 2nd gear as I was going to third. Since the trans was still in 2nd gear (but shifter was in neutral), I couldn't get it into any other gear.

Shifter adjustment should fix it. Just double check to ensure it's pulling the trouble gear all the way into neutral.

Had the same problem on my 67 GS400 4 spd convertible. The complete shifter was worn out so I pulled the complete mechanism and sent it to:

    David’s 4 Speeds

    Milwaukee, WS

David rebuilt it and it works great now :)
