Well it looks like my issue may have been solved. After replacing damn near everything beside the head gaskets, I took my car to the guy who rebuilt the engine 5 years ago.

He was pretty perplexed by the erratic issues the car was having and finally figured that the carb was the issue. Apparently something with the venturi was not letting enough gas into the pistons.

As it was he said the car was missing on 4 of the 8 cylinders....

So I am putting a new 1407 Edelbrock on it with electric choke...

Don't do it! If your carb is original, rebuild it. Putting anything else on is opening up a can of calibration worms.

I did rebuild the carburetor and for some reason it is still not running right. is it possible that the venturi can simply just get so worn out that they throw everything off?

I think they sell them online.

Throwing in a kit isn't the same as a thorough rebuild...I'd have a pro check it out; it may simply be a blocked passage that needs some attention.

Did you ever confirm that both sides of the idle passages were clear? If one of the idle mixture screw passages is blocked it will make the engine run like crap... Without a strong idle you can never get a good transition from idle to the part throttle....

I cleaned everything as thoroughly as i possibly could, soaked all parts in cleaner for a couple of days before re-assembly, followed the tips from the edelbrock re-build book and blew wd-40 as well as compressed air through every damn passage, i guess something must've gotten lodged in the process.

Unfortunately, the cost of having a professional rebuild the carb in my area is pretty expensive, it's was close to $300 for a rebuild. I'm not sure what else the "pros" would do differently than what i had done...

So frustruating, i hate throwing money at the car, i'd like to do it all myself, but sometimes, you gotta pay up, i suppose.

He did mention that something was happening with the throttle.

Since the carter AFB (which is what i have) is basically the predecessor of the Edelbrock AFB, will there be that much issue in calibration and poor fitment?

On here everyone just assumes that a car has a quadrajet. Replace the carter afb with the edelbrock which is just a remake of the original carb.

My quadrajet was screwed up a few different ways and I ended up just throwing on an edelbrock and calling it a day. As much as people complain about them they are great for a daily driver and are actually the correct carb for your car. I did put on a heat blocking gasket though to prevent issues with the choke and hot starting (part # 9266).

I would still say that erratic timing and misfiring points to a bad distributor.

Yea, thats what im starting to see on here. I know the carter is a precursor to the edelbrock. I got a call from my mechanic this morning and he said that the car now runs like a charm, no missing, no rough idle, seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for the clarification.. I cant wait to be back on the road, it's been so long! :TU:

Well, it looks like the issue is fixed. It indeed was the carburetor. Edelbrock 1406 is on the car now along with a different air filter.. finally fixed
