1970 original TH400 tranny is making a whining noise (almost like a blower) when I give it gas. Happens in drive and it's alittle louder when downshifted into 2nd and 1st. Can someone help me indentify the noise?
Swyto H BrunoD here. Change the filter and the oil.usually the wining noise comes from a dirty filter. BrunoD.
I'll try it Low fluid was the first thing I thought of. It doesn't do it right away, just after it's heated up a little. Probaby old fluid - I haven't changed it since I got the car a few moths ago. It was shifting out pretty good and you know the rest... I thought it was strange because I drove the car earlier and didn't hear a thing, waxed it, it cooled down, and went to go for a drive and this. What I really thought was strange is it gets louder as I go from drive down to second and then even louder into first. We'll see if the new fluid and filter does it. Appreciate your help. Thanks.
I would change the fluid and get a quality filter. Sounds to me like the fluid might be old. Was it still red or did it look brown/orange? Did it smell burnt? I'm not an expert on AT Fluid but may the fluid is very old. Lucas and some of the other quality lubricants out there make an additives that might help. Good luck. John :TU:
Looks good John, The tranny fluid looks pretty red and there's no bad smell. Thats why I didn't change it when I got the car. I'm gonna change out the fluid and filter and go from there. Hopefully thats all it is. Thanks again, Robert
Take A Look At This.... This sounds quite similar to the problem I was having. Same kind of noise. It is definitely low pressure in the trans. See this thread: Problem :TU:
If it's a question of low pressure, I believe you can make an adjustment to the pressure regulator. That could help if indeed it's a low pressure problem. John.
You're gonna like this one! Took the car to a mechanic today and we found clutch material in the pan. The fluid have some material in it as well. Here's the best part. When we tried to get the drive shaft out (going to have it rebuilt) we couldn't get it out. There was no play at all. No slide in the yoke. The rear end must have been swapped out in the car at some point. Now I have to have the drive shaft shortened and rebalanced! Why can't people just do the right thing? Well thanks evryone for your help. I'll let you know if we find anymore surprises. Any feedback on putting in a shift kit or not? Basic cruising and maybe a light to light ocassionally. Was considering a torque converter but my mechanic said he wouldn't suggest it.
A shift isn't a bad idea as long as the tranny is in good shape. If it is marginal you hay hasten its life expectancy. Save the converter change unless you plan to build the rest of the drivetrain. Just my .02 Bill

Shift kit Thanks Bill. I'm having it rebuilt ad going with heavy duty components. I'm leaning towards the shift kit. Does it add alot more more pressure to the tranny? Can it do any serious damage that can't be repaired?
Was the rear end hanging at full extension when you tried this? If so, jack it up to tuck it under the car. The rotation of the control arms will bring it back and give you the play you need. As long as the yoke isn't butting up against the output shaft you don't need to shorten the driveshaft.
Keep in mind you have to have the rear suspension fully "compressed" (jounce) to check for output shaft-to-driveshaft bind. Devon
No New Converter? If you found "stuff" in the pan, I'd suggest putting a new converter in it when it goes back in the car. If you have stuff in the pan, it's likely in the converter too. Not a good thing.
More great news! Nicholas and Devon, The driveshaft itself measured 1/2" longer than the measurement from the end on the tranny yolk to the differential. It was actually pushing into the tranny (not mention ruining the rear seal and I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the gears!). The shop that was going to shorten the drive shaft is now making a new one because the old one was bent. Geee....I wonder what caused that! I appreciate really your input. GS464, I'm having the whole tranny completely rebuilt. Not going with a shift kit, they are going to dial up the pressure on the first and second shift on the stock heavy duty rebuilt. Thanks for the good advise!
Just FYI - I had a whining in my TH-400 when my sprag went out in the converter and took the pump out with it. Other than the whining, the tranny appeared fine.
