I would have to assume this is a product liability suit.. they are alleging a defect in the car, that caused the crash or worsened the results of a crash.

I can't imagine that any lawyer would file a suit brought by grieving parents, who where just after money, or someone to blame.

I believe, in most of these cases, the attorney fees are paid by a percentage of any settlement. This is a good thing, because it discourages unscrupulous lawyers from bringing frivolous lawsuits. They don't want to waste their time on a loser..

Having lived in SO FL for about 50 years now, this is one of hundreds of stories just like it. A young person (18) in a new Camaro convertible (big engine) was drunk when he plowed into a building in the rain last year. Kid left the scene, of course.

Building was condemned; kid's father sued the owner of the building and nothing came of anything. Building owner was forced to close the business that had been there since WAY before I came to town and he retired and moved. City tried to charge him for tearing down the building and the kid got a new car as he only had a few scratches.

Money talks--parents live in the "hotsy" subdivision and are obviously going to go the boy's funeral sooner than later given their enabling and entitlement.

Happens every day down here. Sad, right? Frankly, I could care less. Rich and stupid are partners many times around here.

    Wow, that statement is breathtaking..

I am pretty sure my parents did not feel obligated to make a major purchase, or give me something of considerable value, just because I turned 16..

...as a lifelong DC area resident, never drive anything in snow here. Mere mention of snow + drivers = havoc. Drivers won't adjust to conditions. Personally, living off a cut road among corn fields with wife in healthcare (no excuses) meant 4WD pickup shoveled full of snow with me driving. We've retired, it's now a spectator sport...:)

Well, in my defense I did have an extra set of wheels when my dad gave me the vette.

And by give her the car I mean "let her drive her own self to school and basketball and volleyball and everywhere else.

She is off to college but now her sister is going to start driving it.

Plus I hate the ride in the vette. Car has two ride settings, which i believe equate to "back pain" and "kidney damage."

Not bagging on you ... just the statement set me back there.. the mindset..

But "let her drive" is a different deal... my folks let me use one of their cars, till I bought my own..

    hey, no offense taken.

If I had inherited the vette from my dead father, it woulda been sold. Durn thing is much less than 100% reliable at this point.

But he's alive and kickin' and likes seeing it whenever I bring him over. That car was his pride and joy. So selling it is in no way an option.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

Too many frivolous lawsuits driven by greed or not accepting someone's lack of responsibility. Unless it's 'loser pays' the lawyers are the ones getting fat off them.

We need a major overhaul anyway. I know I will piss someone off, but lawyers run this country. To dispute that is just burying your head in the sand. You can sue over almost anything and and the suit will be entertained. It is pitiful. Especially in cases like this. Who do you sue if you fall down your basement stairs while drunk? The builder of the house of course.

The rich, powerful and well connected run this country. The lawyers are just a tool which can be used for right or wrong. Unless the evidence is overwhelming, the richer person will usually win especially if the other party is nowhere near as rich. We can crack down on the lawyers, but a negative consequence will be that most of us who are not powerful will have even less power against the powerful.

Mark Twain said that Aa trial is a contest between two parties to see who hired the best lawyer. A century later, I can't disagree.
